This is what I said on the Arsenal thread:
"The Manchester Clubs and Chelsea have pretty much been able to guarantee themselves a place in the top 4 through their spending power.
It seems that there are a number of other clubs that have decided that as you can spend a fortune and still not get into the top 4, you might as well spend a lot less because there is not much that much difference between 5th and 15th. Newcastle have already gone down this road, Aston Villa and Liverpool look to be following them. "
I think the reason why the Liverpool fans haven't grasped the real situation is because as recently as 2011 they were forking out £35 million for Andy Carroll (i.e. spending a fortune in a desperate attempt to regain former glory), and not getting very far. Since then John Henry abandonned the idea of building a new stadium, and it looks to me like has given up on the idea of getting into the top 4 too. | |
