Tokyo Olympics: 'Plague of oysters' threatens key venue

Officials in Tokyo are nervously eyeing the waters at a major Olympic venue where an unwanted visitor has cost $1.28m (£930,000) in emergency repairs.

The Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo Bay which will host the canoeing and rowing events was ready ahead of schedule.

But the one thing no-one counted on was oysters.

Massive numbers of them had attached themselves to floats intended to stop waves bouncing back across the water and on to the athletes.

The oysters were discovered when puzzled officials began investigating why the floats had started sinking.

Solving the problem has been a huge and time consuming task.

Equipment laid over a span of 5.6km (3.4mi) either had to be dragged ashore and repaired, or cleaned in place by teams of divers. In total, they removed 14 tonnes of oysters.

And these weren't just any shellfish. Officials found they were magaki oysters, which are a hugely popular delicacy during the winter in Japan.

However, they haven't been able to take advantage of their bumper harvest.

"We did not consider consuming them," a member of the team told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. "That would entail safety checks."

A real shame because, although prices vary around the world, those oysters could easily be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The Sea Forest Waterway is the only international standard rowing course in the whole country.

With a budget of only about $1.5m a year to keep it afloat after the games are over, authorities better hope they find a long-term solution to their expensive oyster problem.

Tokyo Olympics: Japan beat Australia as softball gets delayed Games under way in Fukushima

Action at the delayed 2020 Olympic Games finally got under way in Fukushima on Wednesday, with hosts Japan beating Australia 8-1 in their opening softball fixture.

Japan won gold when softball was last in the Olympics at Beijing 2008, and began with a convincing 8-1 victory in a match held two days before the official opening ceremony.

But the match took place in an empty Azuma Baseball Stadium and the Games begin amid widespread opposition in the country, with Covid-19 cases rising.

The arena in Fukushima was selected for the opening fixtures in softball and baseball - which also returns to the Games after a 13-year absence - in a boost for the area after the devastating earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster in 2011.

Organisers had wanted to highlight the recovery of the area since the disaster, and to prove to potential tourists that Fukushima was safe to visit.

But with a state of emergency in place amid rising Covid cases, fans have been banned from attending all events.

Team Japan's determination to retain their 2008 title was evident, with Minori Naito, Yamato Fujita and Yu Yamamoto all clearing the fence with home runs.

Australia had taken the lead in the first inning but Japan's world-beating defence was too much for the visitors.

The world number two side have won golds at the past five Asian Championships and Asian Games, and silver at the 2018 World Championships.

Australia captain Stacey Porter said playing in the opening fixture at the Games was "pretty special", but having no supporters in the stands would take some getting used to.

"No crowd was different. We're used to looking up to the stands and seeing supporters up there, but we knew that they were watching from home."

Pitcher Kaia Parnaby said there was still a "great atmosphere" even without the crowds present.

No crowds - but was there a bear watching?

There may have been no fans there but local media reported a furry intruder in the stadium before first pitch - an Asian black bear.

A security guard on a patrol said he spotted the animal during the night before the opening games and again the following morning.

He told the local police the bear was approximately one metre in length but disappeared before it could be captured and removed.

Sightings of bears are a common occurrence in Japan as they often venture into towns and villages.

BBC Coverage of Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Ron Chakraborty
Lead Executive, Major Events at BBC Sport

This morning reminded us all of the magic of the Olympic Games. Gold medals in swimming and mountain biking and Tom Daley winning his first gold medal at his fourth Olympics. Moments that unite the nation. Moments that inspire the next generation. Moments that become the national conversation.

We know that our audiences love the Olympics and we set a high bar for ourselves with our London 2012 coverage and since we began on Friday, there’s been lots of noise around our perceived lack of coverage for the Tokyo Games. Whilst we’d love to still have 24 live streams and our ‘never miss a moment’ offer from London and Rio in 2016, our new rights deal simply doesn’t allow it. In 2016 we announced that the IOC had awarded the pan-European rights for the Olympics to Discovery, meaning that free-to-air broadcasters across Europe had to carve out their own sub-licence deals with Discovery. The result for all European broadcasters was less coverage of the Games, and for us, it means that we’re allowed two live streams - one on BBC One and one that is available to play out on BBC iPlayer, red button and the BBC Sport website.

Whilst we might not have every moment, we’re confident that we can still be the home of the big moments - as we were this morning. We’ll need to be agile and will often have to make difficult decisions about which sports to show and when to leave one sport to join another. Priorities will shift as we follow the stories of our Team GB athletes and we might need to jump in and out of sports to ensure we bring as many of the big moments as possible. We know this can be frustrating but with 350 hours of live sport across BBC One and BBC Two, plus the second stream on iPlayer we hope we can bring the magic of the Olympic Games to as many people as possible.

And of course, BBC Radio 5 Live has Olympics coverage for all seventeen days of the Games, while the BBC Sport website and app are providing up-to-the-minute coverage of events as they unfold.

We understand the importance of bringing the Olympics to the widest possible audience, particularly those who cannot afford the extra cost of subscription TV. These national moments have a profound cultural and social impact. The benefits of sport to the UK are maximised only when it’s available to and watched by the widest possible audience. We’ll do our best to ensure that as many of the big moments and medal wins are live on the BBC.

Team GB are already doing their bit to inspire and unite people, we want to give the whole nation the chance to cheer them on.
