Saints Injury Woes Continue
Thursday, 13th Aug 2015 16:00

Last season was the worst for years when it came to injuries, there seemed to be barely a week without a new one, sadly that trend seems to be continuing this season.

Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Jordy Clasie and Steven Caulker will miss this weekend's game with Everton due to injury, Clasie although he had recovered from his hamstring injury has injured his ankle ligaments and will be out for two or three weeks, whilst Steven Caulker has a sinus infection which he is taking medication for meaning that he too is unlikely to feature against the Toffee's although it is hoped that he will be fit to return for the first leg of the Europa League game next Thursday.

This is in addition to Fraser Forster and Florin Gardos both of whom are expected to be out till the New Year at least and Ryan Bertrand who is still not ready after his knee surgery.

The loss of Clasie is not so great after the acquisition of Oriol Romeu from Chelsea who could slot straight in the side should Koeman wish, but after the performance in the central defence at Newcastle Saints could well have done with Caulker being slotted back in for the visit of Everton.

In fact the only positive injury news was Koeman himself who had missed the trip to Newcastle on Sunday, at today's press conference he said.

“My injury is okay,” he confirmed. “I had last Friday my operation and it went well. I’m not so comfortable at this moment, I can’t be part of the training sessions on the pitch.

“But I’m happy to be back and to have the contact with the players and staff. That’s good.”

To be fair "woes" is probably a bit strong. Bertrand is an obvious miss, but the new keeper has done a decent job so far and we haven't seen enough of Classie to call him a miss. I'm not sure Caulker will ever be a first team choice to be honest, but we'll see. This is why we're getting a bigger squad though to deal with times like this.

It will be 'woes' if Fonte gets injured in the warm-up...
