Saints midfielder Harrison Reed may be leaving St Mary's in this transfer window and heading over the border to Glasgow.

Glasgow Rangers are believed to be making overtures to Saints about taking midfielder Harrison Reed on loan for the rest of the season.

Reed may have hoped that he may have been able to force his way into the first team reckoning this season after the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin, but this has not proved to be the case after the Frenchman was replaced by not one but two incoming transfers in Jordie Clasie and Oriol Romeu.

This means that Reed has managed just one appearance as sub after two cameo appearances off the bench against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa League, his solitary appearance in the Premier League came a couple of weeks ago at Norwich when he played the final ten minutes of the 1-0 defeat.

Reed is a popular player amongst Saints supporters but the reality is that the players ahead of him are there on merit and that has made it hard for him to make a breakthrough.

A loan spell to Glasgow Rangers might enable him to get regular first team football for the first time in his career and either thrust him back into the first team reckoning at Saints or put him into the shop window.

Reed turned 21 on the 27th of January and his career total of 5 Premier League starts plus another 9 off the bench is not enough at his age, he needs to prove himself with regular football and then decise whether his future lies elsewhere.

Although some Saints fans have demanded Reed et more of a look in, they have to trust Ronald Koeman when he picks other ahead of Reed, it is a very combative area for Saints with 4 or 5 players all vying for positions in the centre ahead of Reed.

Bettwsresident added 06:35 - Jan 29 Best of luck Harry. It was inevitable a loan deal would happen for him this window. A played of his quality can't sit in a squad at his age. He needs to play and it is the only glich on the current Saints set up that they now look to buy from Europe rather than to the homegrown. Is Juanmi really a better prospect/player than Seagar! If Reed had been given the time Clasie has, I think he would be established in the 1st team. MoPo did it here and is doing it at Spurs. I miss the heady excitement of the the "We don't Buy them We breed them" strapline 50ft high St Marys

SaintBrock added 12:40 - Jan 29 It's unfair to blame Koeman for this situation after all he is trying to build a team for Europe and he knows more than most what it takes. Despite our amazement sometimes he believes Ward Prowse & Targett have that potential and they are very much in the side. Harry Reed has been in and out the team and is always around so it can't be that he doesn't pick him because of some perceived antipathy towards the Academy. Far from it. It is clear by now that there must be some limitations in Reed's overall impact which he is finding it difficult to eradicate. I believe Koeman once hinted Reed can be too slow on the ball, meaning he cannot receive the ball and pass it in one touch to a team mate quickly with a high enough level of accuracy success and this must be down to positional awareness or slow co-ordination and not always knowing where his team mates are or are running. The club view may be that he is good but not good enough for Koeman's ambition.

halftimeorange added 13:45 - Jan 29 Steven Davis isn't going to go on forever although he's signed up until 2018. I'd have thought Reed was a ready-made replacement from what I've seen of him, although he's a bit dirtier in the tackle. Could be a coincidence but Davis also improved at Rangers after moving from Fulham.

Bettwsresident added 16:39 - Jan 29 Saint Brock; fair points. He might have gone backwards and in RoKo we trust. I just remember those performances he put in last year on the two occasions I was able to see him live (Swansea (0-1) and Arsenal (2-0)) he was dynamite, breaking up attack after attack and distributing well. Still sore about that Swansea game...I don't get across to many games any more and that was a bad one that was the start of the 14/15 season's unravel. I have a ticket for Swansea on the 13th, hoping for revenge!

jazzdougan added 00:03 - Jan 30 Harrison reed was also very good when we played west ham last season. he's very dynamic and closes down quickly, and in my opinion should be used to close down further up the pitch! He will be a great addition to the Gers. Let's hope he detests playing in blue though!

TeamCortese added 08:01 - Jan 30 This is a terrible move. He should be playing in the English Championship as a worst case scenario. What is doing playing in the Scottish Championship? Yes he'll get game time but he wouldn't really improve. Look at VVD. He spent a few of years in the SPL and when he came to Saints he said he learnt a lot more in his the short time in the EPL than he did with Celtic. That speaks volumes of the standard of Scottish football. I'd be very disappointed if Saints and Harry go through with this....
