Saints Set To Offer Fraser Forster A New Deal
Thursday, 7th Apr 2016 23:06

With rumours of Chelsea circling in the summer Saints are set to offer Fraser Forster a new contract according to the Daily Mirror.

With stories doing the rounds that current Stamford Bridge number 1 Thibaut Courtois wants to quit Chelsea and return to Spain it is inevitable that Fraser Forster should be linked with the Blues.

The problem with that though is that in Asmir Begovic who they signed only 9 months ago from Stoke City for £8 million, Chelsea already potentially have Courtois's replacement already at the club.

So a £20 million pound bid for Fraser Forster might be nothing more than a pie in the sky story circulated by the usual suspects in the media spurred by agent leaks.

But Saints are already starting to open talks to tie in Forster for longer than the two years remaining on his contract according to the media and that is good news, but it should also be noted that Saints themselves have been linked to some quality keepers both at home and on the continent so they are already making contingency plans.

However if Chelsea did come in for Forster at an inflated price it would be likely that Begovic could feel that he has no future at the club and turning 29 this summer he will feel that he is at the peak of his career and he needs regular first team football.

That could be a good opportunity for Saints to do a decent deal if Chelsea offered a price that was hard to turn down, if that was the case £12 million plus Begovic would be a good starting bid to try and persuade Saints to sell.

Your tone puzzles me Nick, I don't think you want hime to leave, or do you and if so why?

Why would Fraser leave a club that offers him the England coach as his personal coach and lavished medical skill and attention on his long term injury to make sure he would be able to come back to continue his career and with no pressure whatsoever on how long that might take?

Actually, goalkeepers are a special breed, seemingly more mature and intelligent than most other players and many with genuine leadership qualities. Perhaps it is because they are usually a bit older than the rest and maybe have an increased sense of personal responsibility because of their role. I think he'll be here for many years yet.

He plays for England, he is the only choice to start here when fit so what possibly apart from money would make him leave. Surely we can find the odd bob or two down the back of the sofa to top him up if needs be.

I hope he stays but he's got his faults. Brilliant shot stopper but does not come off his line to punch and risk a clattering.
I'd be much more impressed if the club tied up the futures of our vital core of outfield players BEFORE the dogs come sniffing round.
