Has anybody asked the simple question "Why the EU". When I voted to join back in the day it was "The Common Market", a free trade area, Why does it need its own civil service, its own government, its own set of commissioners, its own Ambassadors around the world, it even has an ambassador to the UN, its own currency, its own flag, its own anthem, why does it need to act like a country.. There was even talk at one time of an EU army. As far as I know there is no other free trade area that requires the trappings of the EU. |

It seems Starmer did not think Labour would win the last election. But I suppose that is consistent as he did not believe in the manifesto as well. Seems he was economical with the truth in 2019 wonder what he is not telling us in 2024. [Post edited 12 Jun 22:22]

Don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere but I was interested in Starmer calling the Conservative manifesto Corbynesque. Full of promises but no costings. The same Corbyn manifesto that Starmer fully indorsed in 2017 and 2019. |

You obviously think you will win even with the knowledge that we will be in the Schengen area and will be forced to adopt the Euro should we be allowed to re-join. It seems to me that those wanting a return to the EU not only think it was a bad idea to leave but in reality believe there is no circumstance where we could leave no matter what Brussels inflicted on us with majority voting. Is such an organisation a little dangerous. We voted to join the Common Market not what the organisation became and when given the choice we voted out. The EU like any other such organisation wants more and more power until it will eventually kill itself. |

But the problem stems from the fact while taxable the state pension is not taxed at source. That is no tax is paid during the tax year and will have to be paid as a lump sum should the state pension exceed the tax free allowance. So its self assessment or the IR sending payment demands to all receiving only the state pension. [Post edited 28 May 14:11]

The tax allowance is £12750 and the state pension is about £11500. Now while the state pension is taxable it is not taxed at source (like PAYE). Hence any pensioner receiving only the state pension does not in effect pay any tax. Without any change the state pension will eventually exceed the free pay allowance. Which will lead to every state pensioner with no other income having to fill in a self assessment form with the extra burden on the IR at the end of the tax year. Unless the free pay allowance increases in the near future this plan was inevitable whoever gets in. |

Again you are saying Cameron should not have called the referendum but have not said why. The only conclusion is that you know better than the great unwashed. Maybe you think only a select group including you of course should decide who runs the country.

That point of view is interesting. You are blaming Cameron for holding a EU referendum but the result showed a majority wanted out. So in your words the public should not have been given the chance to vote. Maybe in the future some government may adopt that attitude. |

Obviously true but would he not be guilty of stopping a goal scoring opportunity no different from a defender handling on the line. I’ve often wondered about this generally if a keeper handles from a back pass that stops the ball going over the line. Maybe the fact it is only penalised by an indirect free kick changes the situation. [Post edited 22 Apr 16:57]
