| Clubs to vote on expanding the Play-Offs to 6 Clubs 19:29 - Feb 13 with 1057 views | LondonSaint76 | The Football League are holding an EGM - Extraordinary General Meeting - of the 72 FL Clubs on March 5th to vote on a proposal to expand the current format of the Championship Play-Offs for next season from 4 to 6 Clubs. This would mean the 7th & 8th placed finishers getting to join the Play-Off lottery. As I understand it, 8th would play 5th in a one-off ‘eliminator’ game staged at the home ground of the 5th placed team. Likewise, 7th would play 6th at the 6th placed team’s home ground. After that, it reverts to the current format with whoever is left. Think I am right in saying this would mirror the National League’s current Play-Off structure. Anyway, keep an eye out for the result of the vote in March 5th - as I understand it, this is only for the Championship starting next season, not L1 or L2 which will mean all three FL Divisions would have different promotion & relegation criteria. Be interested to see what others think about this. | | | | |

Personally speaking it seems rather absurd that a team finishing 8th could get promoted at the end of the season, but at lot of the decisions nowadays just leave me feeling more and more disconnected from the game in general

That was the Sheff U/Millwall gap last year.

It's bad enough as it is despite the excitement it causes. It's the principle for me that just because you may have had a bum run towards the end of the season you sh1t out, whereas a just about scrape in to 8th and you make it

That's where I was coming from, but no doubt it'll be a money maker for someone at the fans expense

Just gives Wrexham a better chance of getting promoted I think those in power in the prem are desperate to see them at the top table, just think of all of those "soccer" fans in the US and the money that can be made from Hollywood FC

Yep...that's what it is...from a pure reward for a great season it probably would be right just to allow 3 play 4. That ain't happening. I vaguely recall that did happen in some European leagues in the past. Also didn't some leagues have relegation play offs where the highest team in the traditional relegation slot got to play the team above them to decide the last team going down?

Don't really see it myself, the implication being that the 7th or 8th club may be able to hack it in the PL, which given the current situation with promoted teams is fanciful, to put it mildly. i suppose it will mean more ticket sales at the end of the season but cannot see any other plus points. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Clubs to vote on expanding the Play-Offs to 6 Clubs on 21:05 - Feb 14 with 502 views | NYC_Saint | In the US the playoffs across baseball, nfl and nba have all been expanded over the last 5 - 10 years. It creates more games and more revenue opportunities. Typically the teams limping into playoffs in the expanded formats are cannon fodder for the stronger teams. The interesting scenario here though would be an 8th place team would only have to win two games and on two game aggregate semi final to make it to the premier league. That's not totally impossible, especially if they have a late surge in form getting them into eighth at the end of the season: However, an eighth placed championship team would be destroyed in the premier league. So I'm not sure it really makes sense. | | | |
