Time to turn the tables on the Chairboys 00:26 - Mar 10 with 543 viewsdurham_exile

After the heroics at the Valley on Tuesday evening the U’s embark on an even more difficult quest. Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park will require just as much guile from the players and JW will know that the Chairboys are even more desperate to obtain points in their increasingly difficult plight to avoid relegation.

But Colchester now has momentum and some consistency. We are also to embark on four key fixtures against the Blades, Terriers, Stevenage Boro and the Cumbrians and so three points are vital this weekend. Psychologically we would reach the 50 point mark tomorrow and safety for next season, but equally we know that 9th place beckons and then who knows after that.

So JW is unlikely to change a winning team:

Williams

Wilson Magnus Eastman White

Izzet Rowlands Henderson Woody

Gillespie Odejayi

Subs:

Sears, Doogie, Bond, Heath, Coker or Vincent

The games come thick and fast in March and so JW will need to consider some other squad players:

Vincent, O’Toole, Coker and Doogie can all step in if needed in key areas of the field.

Tuesday night will have sent out a message to the other teams in league one that there is another challenger for the top six places.

Earlier in the season we fared badly against the top teams, but if you examine those games closely we were unlucky not to have gained more points. Charlton won 2-0 and looked comfortable at the WHCS, but at the Galpharm we led 2-1, had a perfectly good goal chalked off for a possible 3-1 lead and ended up desperately unlucky not to have equalised. At Bramall Lane we never recovered from the disastrous first ten minutes and Sheff Wed scored twice without replay at Hillsborough but it was a close affair.

Now we have the chance to reverse those results and that would definitely advance us up the table and bring sixth place into the reckoning.

So Wycombe stand in our way tomorrow and on current form we should see them off but it will be a tight encounter. We all recall games either at Loakes Park or Adams Park down the years. I am still haunted by that FA Cup defeat in the 1985/86 season 2-0 when the infamous Kirk Game played for the U’s. But equally there have been some memorable victories like the 1993 - 5-2 performance.

JW may consider 20 minutes for the flying winger Vincent tomorrow perhaps.

Having had the opportunity to review Woody’s wonder strike, he and Stevie G will be well marshalled tomorrow which should allow Hendo the opportunity to create some space and score. He is long overdue a goal.

Sears may also be considered but from the bench. His chance will come in the next few games, perhaps in one of the home matches coming up.

So we must ensure that there is no furniture restoration tomorrow and we must come out of the blocks raring to go and with one intent, to win the game.

Exciting times to be a Colchester supporter,

Up the U’s

That was a painful result, the positive being a clean sheet.

Charlton v Notts County 2-4 put an especially sour spin on the day. 2 more points to catch-up now.

Poll: In Daniel's PL, Sector4 is top, I'm 2nd or 3rd depending on the update

Pete - as I had suggested I would have played anyone but Wycombe yesterday. We just can't defeat them at the moment. They always seem to raise their game and also yesterday made some "meaty challenges" in their desperation to avoid the drop.

I hope that Martin Rowlands is able to play next saturday (he is definitely out on Tuesday night).

We still have 6 games to play in March and it is already the 11th!!!

The squad will be tested to the limit over the next four games and how we fare in those key fixtures will determine whether the play offs are realistic or not.

You can guarantee it's going to be exciting!
