So far, Cusack has proved that not only can he recruit his old mates to fill the midfield, but that he also has some tactical know how and balls! Both matches against Rushden and Darlington have shown that Curtis and Cusack have the ability and the player variety to chop and change things depending on the situation...a must if this season will prove successful in any way.
Generally this season's side succeeds where last year's team failed due to the new competition for places in all areas of the pitch. Finally, we have battling qualities in midfield, some life up front and some toughness at the back - things that were very rare in last season's squad.
My biggest worry in pre-season was the fact that the squad didn't seem to gel and was having problems in the communication department. Nevertheless, last Saturday my prayers were answered when Rushden came to the Vetch for an entertaining encounter with a 6,000 strong crowd and an exciting atmosphere. Finally the fans were offered some drama (distinctly lacking in 2001/2002) and a feast of cracking goals. Many flocked to see Thomas, who marked his debut with a goal and looked a class above, but Paul "Psycho" Reid stole the show with a hard-fought performance and a became candidate for goal of the season. On a personal note, it was brilliant to see Andrew Mumford (as good as he may be) to be on the bench. Last season he gained many plaudits, but those who watched him may also have realised that he became lazy and perhaps felt that he was too good for the rest of the squad. He also had a poor season and by Cusack leaving him on the bench, in both games so far, it can only improve his attitude. Let's face it though - a Mumford firing on all cylinders will easily fit into this midfield and add a bit of physical strength where Phillips is lacking.
The one major negative aspect was the incompetent referee who dished out horrendous decisions to both sides. One linesman in particular also seemed prone to switching off for minutes on end and ruined the spectacle to an extent. However, the trip to Darlington proved a much more agreeable refereeing experience and although the game could have been described as a typical third division match (hoof and hope); the Swans proved that they would not crumble under pressure. Darlington did cause problems with their huge front men, but remember this squad is still coming together, with Theobald still yet to arrive in the Third Division. However, Terry Evans has deputised well in that central defensive role and has impressed all that have seen his performances.
The season has started well for Swansea and lest we not forget that the squad from last year would probably have crumbled against a strong side like Rushden and shown no fight away at Darlington. Saturdays match at Gigg Lane could be a great chance to achieve that all important first win against a side that has failed to gain a point so far (good luck Murphy and Psycho)...and with a few more wins under our belt, we will prove extremely hard to beat when Wolves travel down to South Wales in September.
