Speaking to the Western Mail, Trundle commented that the whole squad was disappointed to not reach the play offs last time around and that the best way to make amends is to achieve that success this season. He believes that the acquisition of the summer signings has made the squad stronger than the one that ended last season and the experience gained by last season's newer players will stand the team in good stead for the challenges ahead.
"I think we are stronger this year because the manager has added more experience to the squad with players who've played at the highest level or just below," Trundle said.
"Last season we were a young side. You've got to remember that for a lot of the lads, it was their first full season in the Football League.
"But this year we've got a good blend of experienced players and young lads.
"The fact we've brought in people like Garry Monk, who's played in the Premiership, and Adrian Forbes, who's played in Division One, will make us stronger.
"Not only that, but the young lads who started out last year will have learned from their experiences. This time round they'll know what they're getting."
And after saying yesterday that he was looking to extend his stay at the Vetch, chairman Huw Jenkins has vowed to keep anyone at the club that the manager wants to stay ''Anybody who is performing well and who Kenny Jackett says he will want to keep we will sit down and talk to. In fact we will do everything in our power to make sure they stay at the club." Jenkins told the Evening Post.
Jenkins also warned against fans expecting the same start as last season and stated that the support may have to be patient this season instead of expecting results from the very beginning ''Everyone connected with the club should be fully aware that it will not be sorted in the first few months of the campaign. ''They have all got to realise that we may not start as well as we did last season and it will be a long, hard tour. ''The campaign should be split into three sections of 15 or so games and at the beginning of each of those we should come out fighting. ''What I can assure the fans is that we will not allow the club to stutter as it did last season and when the needs arise we will get stronger. ''A lot of other sides in this division have strengthened during the summer. Every club is going to be fitter and more organised and it's going to be a long, long nine months. ''We have to make sure we do all we need to do to make sure we stay with them on that front.''
Jackett though has remained tight lipped ahead of the Northampton game for his first line up of the new season with injuries and suspensions wrecking any thoughts he may have had early on in the summer.
The club have advised anyone who has not received their season ticket that they can collect a ticket for the Northampton game from the club shop between 9.30 and 4.30 tomorrow or before 2pm on Saturday. They are also advising fans to arrive early for the season opener to ensure entry into the ground and Northampton's decent away support will be housed on the West Terrace. |
