FAW Premier Cup Final - Preview

Well it's that time of year again, the FAW Premier Cup Final is here. The tie is a reverse fixture of last season's Final as the Swans travel to Wrexham for the clash.

First of all, congratulations to Wrexham for winning the court case, which secures them the ground from former chairman Alex Hamilton.

They need to come out of administration by June, so the extra money will benefit them more than us. Although, obviously we still want a win and the £100k prize at the end of it.

Hopefully they will overcome their problems and progress as a club, much the same as we have done.

Last years final was the last game at the Vetch Field. A crowd of 9,324 saw Andy Robinson score the winning goal of the game and the last at the Vetch as the Swans came from 1-0 down to triumph 2-1 within a week of securing promotion to League 1!

Apart from the win last season, we hadn't beaten the Dragons since August 1993, since then having played 12, won 0, drawn 3 and lost 9.

Wrexham have an amazing record in the competition, appearing in the final on all but 1 occasion since its formation in 1997. In the 2003/04 season, Wrexham beat Rhyl 4-1 and the season previous they hammered Newport 6-1.

Wrexham reached the final with a semi-final win over TNS at the Racecourse, although after a 3-3 draw, the game was decided on penalties, with the Dragons winning 5-4. They traveled to Newport for the quarter-final, winning 2-0. The Jackarmy faced Carmarthen in the semis, but only won the game 3-2 after extra time. An away fixture at Rhyl gave the Swans a 1-0 win to progress to the semi-final.

It is a shame that the game takes place now, as with the Swans still pushing for promotion, however that may be, and the hype that the FLT Final has been getting, most fans have taken preference for visiting the capital rather than making the journey north.

In any case, the Swans kitty will be boosted yet again with a minimum £50k coming for an appearance in the Final and a win would secure the full £100k which would come in handy when the transfer window opens in the summer.

Wrexham have a few things to think about with midfielder Darren Ferguson returning to the squad, but centre-back Dennis Lawrence has an ankle problem which see's Dave Bayliss return from Rochdale after a loan move. The Dragons will likely field on loan strikers Matt Derbyshire who has scored 8 goals in as many appearances during his stay at the Racecourse and Sam Williams who has been kept on for his 3rd and final month from Aston Villa.

The Swans look as though they will be without Darren Way who is still having pain with a stress fracture that has reoccurred. But, even with £100,000 at stake Jackett may include some of the squad players as he maintains his focus on promotion. Shaun McDonald, who has played really well in both of the FAW Cup games and showed promise when he has featured in League games for the Swans may be given a starting role in the centre of midfield.
