Garry Monk says he is enjoying this season more than any other - and wants to sign a new Swans deal

The Swansea City captain almost seems to have been one of those players that is getting better the older he gets.

A rock at the heart of the Swans defence - Monk's performances in the time he has been at the club have improved no end and to the extent that earlier this week, Paulo Sousa said he wanted to tie the captain into a new deal at the club.

And that is exactly what Monk wants as well as he told the Evening Post "I am not interested in running my contract down

"Some players do run contracts down so they finish up as free agents, but I have said all along I want to stay and the sooner we can sort it out the better.

"I enjoy my football at Swansea and I am settled in the city, so hopefully it's just a matter of time before we sort out the small details.

"I am loving life at the moment and this is one of my favourite seasons. Every game is a big, big game for us and every one is exciting.

"We are starting to show that we are coming together as a squad now," Monk adds.

"To be part of the that, and to be the captain, is brilliant for me.

"I look forward to every game.

"I am 30 now. I am not old, but in the last couple of years I have found myself appreciating every season more and more.

"You see things like what's happened to Ferrie (Bodde) and realise how easily you can be sat doing nothing. I did my cruciate (in August 2006) and I think ever since then I have relished every game and every season.

"Every season is getting more important to me because I want to show that I'm more than capable of holding my own.

"This is my sixth season at Swansea and the club is getting better and better," he says.

"I wasn't here the year we survived relegation to the Conference, but I know all about that and I know the boys who were involved.

"When I arrived we were still in the bottom division, but since then we have gone up through the leagues and I feel proud to have been part of that. I want to keep going and going because I believe that if we get things right, we can go further.

"Look at the QPR game," he says. "We kept a clean sheet, but Dorus (de Vries) pulled off two world-class saves to get us there so we were quite lucky.

"In the games before that, though, we have definitely deserved the clean sheets.

"We are still one of the most open teams in the Championship, but we are definitely more solid under the new gaffer, especially at set-pieces."
