Five Things We Learned From Newcastle Match

It was another top performance from the Swans at the Liberty yesterday as they won their first home game of the season thanks to goals from Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew but what would we class as the five things we learned from this game.

1. Holding onto Ashley Williams was essential

I know it probably sounds obvious but we would have been hugely weaker without Ash in the centre of our defence. He completed 102 of 105 passes attempted against Newcastle and there wasn't a moment where he looked troubled by the Newcastle attack. There will come a time when we need to replace him but he doesn't show any signs of slipping on his standards at all and he must be classed as one of our most shrewdest pieces of business ever?

2. Jonjo Shelvey can go as far as he wants in this game

Believe it or not but there are still people who don't believe that Jonjo Shelvey is a good player. His pass for Gomis to score the first yesterday was simply world class and if Roy Hodgson doesn't include him (and Jack Cork for that matter) in his next England squad then their national team will be the weaker for it. It has been a massive 2016 so far for Jonjo and he just keeps getting better and better

3. Newcastle fans are not the 'legends' the media make them out to be

There is much written/spoken in the media about the wonderful Newcastle support but I couldn't help leaving the Liberty yesterday wondering if they had actually bothered to turn up. Certainly from my seat around halfway in the East Stand I could not hear them and they certainly didn't support their team in the way that we are told these passionate people are. Of course it can't help that their team surrendered so easily but remember this one the next time Alan Shearer tells you how wonderful they are

4. Did you say something?

We went into the 11th season at the Liberty Stadium and we are yet to find a PA system that actually allows people to hear what is being said. There was a minutes applause that people joined in with but had no idea why they were doing it and if it wasn't for the big screens then we would have no idea that Tommy Craig was coming onto the pitch. Not quite sure how difficult it is to create a PA system that works but SSMC have failed year on year to do this

5. Leon Britton will always be a Swansea legend

The singing of his name and the reception he got when he came onto the pitch was one that I suspect was tinged with a little question of whether we would see him playing again for us at the Liberty. Leon has to say because as we proved this time around if we have a midfield injury then we need him in the squad so I hope that he is still here come September 2nd.
