Thread of the Week - Still -15 in L**ds!!
Thursday, 16th Aug 2007 12:39

For the first TOTW on the new site we will be a bit naughty and use one from the old site just to remind everyone who we are and what we stand for!

smallblueram never lost sight of the fact that we still feel a deep dislike for all things Elland Road and commented on the fact that their appeal was dismissed and our favourite Yorkshire club still have to start the season on -15 points. That is a pretty stiff handicap for anyone.

This is a new website and we have a new Message Board and we hope that everyone will contribute to it in the same way that they did on the old one. The rules will be pretty much the same as we want to keep it primarily a football message board for all ages and members of the family.

We have always had a reputation for encouraging sensible debate and we have been quite ruthless over many years with nonsense posters and 'trolls' - that will not change.

In the last week on the old site we had a lot of discussion about the potential new signings - most of whom have names that sound difficult to pronounce now but will become very familiar by Christmas. Remember Asanovic and Wanchope? People still vary the pronunciations from Ass-san-o-vich to Assa-no-vitch and from One-chop to Wan-shoppy! Perhaps we should be glad Graham Richards doesn't have to get his mouth around them! Remember Ker-vanna and Kin-clard-zer? :)

We also were very unlucky not to take all three points from our first home match in which Tyrone Mears and Craig Fagan played extremely well - as did the whole team to be fair. RamZoners were thrilled to see Andy Todd make a supreme start to his Derby career, how good is it to see the name 'Todd' on a Derby teamsheet again?

All we ask on our new website is that our regular posters enjoy discussing potential signings, rumours and results with courtesy for the views of other posters and with the same high standards of debate that we mostly enjoyed on the old site.

Thanks to smallblueram who has the distinction of initiating the first ever Thread of the Week on RamZone.net and thanks to everyone who has joined us for contributing in all the discussions.

We are certain that as the new site evolves and more features appear that you will all forget what it was like to post on the site!

Raise your glasses and drink a toast to the success of RamZone.net!
Cheers!

Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Leeds have lost their appeal against their 15-point deduction for an alleged breach of the Football League's insolvency policy on Thursday.
The chairmen of the other 71 Football League clubs voted "overwhelmingly" to sanction the club and then again to uphold the original punishment.

In both cases, the outcome was higher than a 75% majority vote.

Truly gutted.....

barney_fulhamfc Posted on 9/8 13:22
yes indeed

Well they tried to get away with it by going into administration at end of last season, to avoid points loos this time around. Didn't quite work out that way did it?

re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Not even reduced on appeal, hmmmm...at least the League underlined the effectivness of the penalties of adminitration!

No doubt Crazy Ken will take it to Europe, The White House and beyond to plead his 'case'.

re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Forest voted FOR them. Tvvats.

johnbartonsmoustache Posted on 9/8 13:37
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

They're not allowed to take it to court. They signed an agreement with the football league saying as much when they came out of administration so there's no way of overturning it.

I'm not quite old enough to remember the rivalry between us and them so I'm not into this "We hate Leeds" stuff, they mean nothing to me, but i do think that 'there but for the grace of god' with this. So could have been us 12 or so months ago and I still worry that it might well be us sometime down the line.

No wonder Forest voted for them. Might be them in 6 months.

Premier_Ram Posted on 9/8 13:42
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Do you think the other 71 chairmen were all singing

"We all hate Leeds, and Leeds and Leeds"

when thay handing in their voting slips - LOL

re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

ROFL. I hope so.

BlewburyRam Posted on 9/8 13:48
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Listen to your elders JBM, you really should hate Leeds. The 70's and 80' when they played the dirtiest football imaginable, destroyed others grounds, made an away trip to Ellend Road as appealing as a fortnight in Beirut on a peace keeping trip and just kept bleating `no-one likes us, its really mean' are just too much to forgive them for.
Hangings too good for `em.

Hemingway Posted on 9/8 13:52
IT SHOULD BE -25

They cheated their way out of a 10-point deduction last season. Still, I'll settle for this.

I don't know, first Jeremy Keith gets his commeupance, and now Ken Bates.

Why oh why do bad things happen to good people?

Bester76 Posted on 9/8 14:03
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

They weren't much better the last time we were up there. Anyone else remember Kewell's dive at PPS? Cheating tvvat. Same old Leeds.

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 14:11
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

BlewburyRam you talk sh it.

In the early 80's we mainly had home grown youngsters brought thro' by Eddie Gray. They were a million miles from being dirty. When Wilkinson became manager they changed to be ultra disciplined, but never dirty.
I can remember coming out of the BBG with Derby "fans" across the road just laying into anyone with a Leeds scalf on.
Well hard.

Ahh yes I can't remember anything but that happening, poor hard done to L**ds.

You don't refute the claims for the 70s though?

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 14:25
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

One thing that has become very clear is the blind hatred and vitriol that has come out. Strangely when we went down from the prem it was Ipswich and Wigan fans but now it's a clear majority Derby fans who only ever see the dark side of Leeds. The strange fact that European sports writers had us down as the best football side in Europe during the Revie era whereas you lot just see dirty snarling filthy scum, the same thing your current manager dishes out from the touchline, hence he'll be banned.

Don't be so sure that Bates won't still be happy. Wait until the timings right and sell to some wealthy Russian. Should make a few bob!

Mandaric turned up too late to vote - transport problem so he says.

Bester76 Posted on 9/8 14:33
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Is this the same European football where match-fixing/bribery was rife? No wonder Revie/Leeds were so well thought of.....

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 14:33
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

What about when we beat Southampton 7:0 with pure prescision passing football long before Wenger did it at Arsenal. Just before that we beat ManU 5:1. There was a dirty side to Leeds under Revie. The Daily Mail fair play league proved that. But to make that the be all and end all of your observations is very blinkered. As a comaparison Leeds don't really think much about Derby as there main rivals are ManU. They also have a dislike of Chelsea but I'm not sure why (since long before Bates). But as a Leeds fan I could see ManU were a great side in 1999 even though Roy Keane did things that even you lot might admit were pretty bad. Let alone the ref baiting that Fergie must encourage his players to do to try to get a ref to give descisions in there favour. I don't recall any Leeds team doing that. But I still recognise they were a great team.

smallblueram Posted on 9/8 14:35
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

'blind hatred' - I think you've missed more than a few teams fans off that list.

'whereas you lot just see dirty snarling filthy scum' - that's all you were. still least you don't forget your history, even though you seem doomed to repeat it.....

"Is this the same European football where match-fixing/bribery was rife? No wonder Revie/Leeds were so well thought of....."

What the f£ ck has that got to do with Leeds?
Leeds "lost" 1:0 in the 1973 cup winners cup fianl. The ref admitted to taking bribes from the Italians.
Leeds "lost" in the 1975 Euro fianl. The ref/linesman admitted to taking bribes.

I don't recall any Leeds game in Europe where Leeds were even accused of let alone found guilty of bribing.

Lads, lads, lads, let bygones be bygones and let us concentrate on the future.

PS Leeds are 15 poins behind Doncaster, Yeovil and Cheltenham

You mean you were gazumped?

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 14:50
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Still West Ham can play an illegal player who scores loads of goals, but that's ok.
We came out of admin with a CVA but it is challenged by the IR. The administrators then sell the club without a CVA due to the IR, even though creditors can receive over 50% without the CVA, far more than the 8p in the pound with the CVA, so why should Leeds be punished for that??

Bester76 Posted on 9/8 14:56
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Strictly speaking thought, don't the league rules stipulate that you have to come out of administration via a CVA? In which case you broke the rules.

Kharmic justice for trying to dodge the ten point deduction last season IMO.

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 15:17
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

"Kharmic justice for trying to dodge the ten point deduction last season"
That's probably it, but again Leeds didn't break the rules that were in place.

Like I said, the IR forced us to come out without a CVA. Leeds didn't want to do that.

hantsram Posted on 9/8 15:42
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Yes I remember their wretched fans destroying the BBG on a couple of occasions. Them and Chelsea - the worst fans in football.
The one good think to come from the Chelski revolution is that all their thugs have been priced out of matches.

Bester76 Posted on 9/8 15:51
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

The IR were obviously unsympathetic towards Leeds' predicament. They would I imagine have made their decision informed by their own requirements rather than those of Leeds United FC.

The lesson to be learned here surely is that you don't want to get yourselves into the position whereby the IR can effectively push you into a breach of the league's rules.

BlewburyRam Posted on 9/8 16:10
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Well, I don't think I do (having been there at the time) and I am one man, you think i do and you are one man. Ken bates and his purchase of LUFC is one man that over 75% of League managers (a lot of men) have an opinion on. Who is wrong I wonder??

YOU'RE NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE !!!

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 16:16
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Bester76 that's the best statement made in all this. Of no doubt the blame lies with the despised Bates. He put the club into admin with a plan that didn't quite work out how he planned.

BlewburyRam this has made us even more famous.

throsby Posted on 9/8 16:45
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Just to reiterate;

HMRandC (to bring the IR up to date) are acting upon procedures put in place by my dear old dad about 4 years ago.

re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

"Leeds don't really think much about Derby as there (sic) main rivals are ManU."
Used to be, although Leeds always played 3rd fiddle after Man City and Liverpool for ManU, iirc.

I think you'll find your main rivals now are Doncaster Rovers, actually.

BaaLocks Posted on 9/8 18:23
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

One of my first ever memories of European football is the morons of Leeds ripping up the seats in Paris after getting played off the park by an infinitely superior Bayern Munich side. Even as a nine or ten year old it made me ashamed that they came from my country.

In 2000 I watched Leeds play in Prague against Slavia. Their fans were a complete disgrace, to compare the atmosphere of their fans to that of the Italian side Udinese that they played in the previous round was beyond compare. Again, I was ashamed to be considered to be from the same country as them. One match later the Istanbul incident happened and while I don't condone it I can clearly see how locals might have taken significant exception to the way their fans behaved.

Now to the team, the Leeds of Bremner, Giles, Reaney et al was a pretty good side - no denying it. Smudger was a great striker and Lorimer couldn't half welly a ball. But they were instantly dislikable for their continual sharp practice on the pitch. Even as a kid I could see that.

But the reason I dislike Leeds is greater than any of this, it is because they think they have a right to be considered a 'big team'. They honestly believe that football today is a worse place for not having them at the top and that they deserve sympathy for a situation that is entirely of their own making and entirely driven by the purest form of incompetent greed. Every club is where it is because it deserves to be there. Be it the Dingles, the Wendies, Blackpool, Preston or Third Lanark there are many teams who have a far more lengthy history than the few fleeting years of success Leeds had.

And there are a few fans in amongst all of this who I recognize are decent, normal people who have seen their football club hit the rocks but to them I say - you could always try Bradford.

Does it include the first 20 minutes of Gaby's dad kicking anything German he could get near enough to?

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 20:02
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

BillyBic = deluded. You see what you want to see.
What about Eddie Gray, total skilless monster dirty cruching tackler, is that what you see too?
Lorimer, I suppose his shot was really meant to be a kick at anything German also.

Kenny Burns. I suppose he was a good honest hard player at Derby wasn't he? and Forest too. But at Leeds, a total animal.

BaaLocks Posted on 9/8 21:29
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Errr, Woody, I think you need to read a little more info on your club. Was it Leeds or Bayern who received a three year ban in Europe for the behaviour of their fans? You don't need to answer that.

Just in case you thought that was all behind you btw, check this out from offside.com

"They might have fallen on hard times on the pitch, but Leeds has come out on top as the club in England with the most fans banned from attending matches. Twenty new hooligans have pushed Leeds to the prime position with a total of 115 fans banned this season.

Portsmouth comes in second with 110 on the banned list while last year’s champions, Cardiff City, have seen their numbers fall from 152 to 109. Stoke City (108) and Manchester United (106) round out the top 5."

Woody01530 Posted on 9/8 22:56
re: Still -15 in L**ds!!!!

Yes Leeds were banned for 2 years actually. And they had to qualify for Europe for a year to be knocked off, 1976 and 1978.
Fans had a battle with the French police. Although you wont agree it was something similar to the heavy handed police reported in Europe this year involving Manu and Spurs.
Don't know anything about banned fans recently, so I'll have to take your word for it.
Leeds's hooligan problem all but vanished in 1987 when Leeds decided to employ there own stewards at away matches, Chelsea did the same. This had the effect of making supporters treat the stewards as there own, in all probability they were! I don't go to many away games now but back then it all but stopped it. Think of the 'major' incidents.. Derby 1984, Brum 1985, Bradford 1986. Nothing since then. I know about Bournemouth in 1990 but we won and were promoted after 8 years. 16000 Leeds fans turned up but there was only room for 2000. Battle with police near the ground. That game should never have been played on a bank holiday.
Millwall came to Leeds in Dec 2004, no Millwall stewards, it was like back to the 80's. Apart from that game at ER I can't think of a game at home with any major trouble in 20 odd years. Fans of different clubs appear in pubs near the ground with no trouble. Certain games the police have made 12:00 kickoffs, e.g. Cardiff. They hate anything English and I could go on about what they did to 'normal' supporters travelling on organised buses including woman and kids with bottles of piss at Cardiff at the FA cup game 5 years ago.
