100% agree with the latter, mate.

I'd throw in:

Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
Heartbreaker - Lef Zep
London's Calling - The Clash
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad - Moby
Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters (admittedly he breaks it in, but that is the base of blues right there!)
Club Foot - Kasabian (one of the greatest starts to an album...)
Cochise - Audioslave
Back in Black - ACDC

There's just a few off the top of my head.

Great shout on London's Calling.

Thinking about it The Clash could certainly do a good intro.

Agree with the first two posts,Papa was a Rolling Stone and Superstition (Living for the City as well) are two awesome blinding intros and then there's also:
(The track works nicely as the film intro especially, as it builds to Issac Hayes and the backing singers voice coming in post 3 minutes):

BTW mentioning backing singers I thoroughly recommend the 2014 Oscar winning documentary film 'Twenty Feet From Stardom'

A good intro is instantly recognisable..

Ferocious competition here. Not sure these would win compared to a couple of the early entries but they're worth mentioning I think:

Since Hunter brought up Aussie band AccaDacca, the real best opening rifts from them are:

Thunderstruck with a superb guitar rift to get things going and Hells Bells which is used throughout the world in sporting venues to get the crowd going.

The intro has to fit the song but a great song doesn't really need a particularly great intro, it just needs to fit. This song is just about 100% written by Lennon but McCartney wrote the distinctive little mellotron bit right at the start:

This one just wouldn't be the same without its intro, so that makes it a great intro:

And this is really good too:

Totally agree with the OP Pommy.

It's about halfway through before the singing starts on that version. I think I am right in saying that it only appears on that album as well. I remember waiting for it to come up on ebay a good few months before I was able to pick it up for a few quid.

Some really good ones their Papa was a Rolling Stone, Superstition, London Calling, Shaft and I'm with Brighton on Curtis Mayfield.

The intro on this always does it for me, very emotive reminds me of some amazing times.....

Yes, good call Brixton.

Slightly more obscure but I love the intro on this Badly Drawn Boy track.

Hmmmm, born slippy, Essential Music Fest in Stanmer Park, Brighton circa 95/96 ??? ......plenty of mushrooms, scrumpy, jazz cigarettes, Gay Pride March & a March For Jesus on the seafront !!! This ended the perfect daze even though the Prodigy were on last but they were pony.

'Hear My Train Coming' or even 'Catfish Blues' or even anything by the JHE.
The best guitar intro and outro on any record in the World is the superb 'blowing Free' by Wishbone Ash.
The best guitar sole is of course on the excellent 'Reelin In The Years' Steely Dan.
The best guitar Amp probably ever built is the amazing Vox AC30.
The best guitar probably in the world is a 1954 Fender Stratocaster.
But without doubt the best guitar intro in the world ever is this gorgeously clean sounding and stunning piece of work;

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

The Strat MUST be black though. In fact all guitars must be black. Scrap that, all instruments must be black.

Twist and Shout and John's intro to it at the Royal Variety Show for pure humour and class takes some beating.

Some great shouts here. I've always thought Superstition was the best, but this is close, too:-
