A fairly obvious and inevitable byproduct of treating landlords like criminals and tenants like innocent babes who would never do anything wrong.
Yes there are plenty of rubbish landlords out there, but there are far, far more problematic tenants. When the balance of responsibility tips too far one way then many landlords will simply decide that it's not worth the hassle. |  |

Yep the law is changed so you can’t evict non paying tenants for 6 months it puts you off.
Those who make these laws don’t realise some people need the rent to pay the mortgage.

It's a huge problem but the solution is a lot more complex than providing a roof over people's heads.
During the pandemic every homeless person was provided with a room but they were still on the street in Swansea at about 7:30am and had clearly been there overnight.
At the moment they're all provided with a bed somewhere, many are in the ibis on fabian way but they don't want to be there so stay in town.
It's a problem caused by their upbringing, addiction and mental illness. They can't hold a tenancy together even if they are given one in many cases.
I can see there being 500000 on the streets by 2030 unless someone gets a grip on it. | | | |

The Labour Government in power between 1997 and 2010 delivered social housing at a far higher rate than the Conservative Government.
While you specifically talk about council houses, the number of new council homes began to flatline shortly after Sir John Major succeeded Mrs Thatcher as Conservative PM and in 1994, the number of new council homes being built dipped below 1,000 for the first time.
Labour put the emphasis on housing associations and social landlords as opposed to councils to provide affordable housing to those on low incomes. Labour were responsible for an increasing proportion of social house building, between 1997 and 2010, some 350,000 housing association dwellings were built. When both housing association homes and council houses are considered as 1 entity, Labour built more affordable properties in 2009 than the Conservatives did in each year between 1987 and 1990.
Good job Labour had the foresight to facilitate the provisos of these 350,000 additional dwellings or we’d have even more people homeless. | | | |

As you say there are some terrible landlords out there, I know someone who’s renting a mouldy property and can’t get the landlord to do anything about it which is outrageous given the amount of money being paid, equally I’ve visited numerous rentals which have been turned in to dirty, disgusting dumps by poor tenants.
I’m far from convinced the new legislation will improve the situation, there needs to be a mechanism in place to punish poor landlords and poor tenants. | | | |

I had a tenant who continually complained of mould. Unfortunately she continually ran the tumble dryer with doors and windows closed. That was somehow our fault. We had to completely strip out the kitchen electrics by the time we got shot of her. | |

He insists that there enough available beds for all in the region to have a bed every night but unfortunately they’re not used for a variety of reasons (predominantly mental health and substance misuse issues)
Seems like it’s as much a social care and health issue as a financial one. | | | |

Vast majority don't want help, they turn down accommodation on a nightly basis, look what happened during covid, they put homeless people up in guest houses on Oystermouth Road.
Fighting and wrecking property every night, some people just don't want help.

Illegal immigration and mass immigration absolutely drains the pot.
It always makes me laugh when people complain about doctor and hospital waiting times, strain on the NHS etc but are all for bringing as many people into the country as want to come. I hate the saying turkeys voting for Xmas but it’s very apt.
In the US it costs the tax payer between $12-$16 BILLION, every year. No idea what that number is like in the U.K. but it would absolutely be a drain.
There is a push to house Ukrainians with people lapping it up for virtue, what you think the take up would be to house U.K. homeless?

It does. It is nothing whatsoever to do with immigration. Every homeless person in Swansea could have had a warm bed in front of a TV during last nights attrocious weather, but I bet there were still about 50 in Swansea town centre doorways and car parks.
It's a mark of their entire lifestyle. My wife used to work with homeless women and it goes far deeper than giving them a room.
The most negative change though, for which the government are responsible, is stopping directly paying landlords for tennants rent (in most cases) but giving it to the tennant directly for the to pay. Well done Ian Duncan Smith.
If you give an adict cash they'll only spend it on their addiciton. Especially if they are mentally ill or not provided with help to beat that addiction. | | | |
