It Was Wrong To Boo Wright
It Was Wrong To Boo Wright

The treatment of Jermaine Wright against Barnsley was disgraceful.

I cannot remember when a player was booed by Saints fans in the way Jermaine Wright was against Barnsley on Saturday and to be blunt it didnt help anybody.

Yes Wright was having an appalling game, but Im sure that he wasnt doing it on purpose.

But it doesnt help the side, when you are chasing a game as Saints were, its off putting, not only to the player in question but also to the team in general, in times of trouble the team needs total support, the time to show displeasure is at the end of the game.

During the Branfoot era, it was decided that the manager wouldnt get stick during the game, only before and after and that the team would get 90 minutes of the fans completely behind them, this must have worked because the team picked up some vital wins in games that they shouldnt really have got something out of and this was vital at the end of the seaso, long after Branfoot has gone, the point im making is we dont want to cut off our noses to spite our faces, we want to win games not lose them.

As for Wright I feel that the fans are realising that he is a player that seems to be in the side, not on merit but because he is the managers favourite and the booing was more supporters venting their frustration at the manager who seems to be getting selections badly wrong at the moment.

Its a similar situation to that of Davis last term, back then the fans felt that he was being picked despite poor form and that there was a better man waiting to come in, to be fair the fans are split about Ostlund and whether he is good enough, but most supporters would concur that he is better than Wright in that position and that if Burley doesnt rate the Swede, and its clear that he doesnt in that he has rarely picked him for long periods in the last year, then why doesnt he sign another right back.

The fans have thought this and come to the conclusion that its because Burley is going to pick Wright whatever happens, Paul Telfer and Gordon Strachan spring to mind as a comparison, the difference there though was that Telfer could play a bit, yes he didnt always justify the Strachan's faith in him in the yes of the fans, but he did pull it out of the hat when it mattered, sadly Jermaine Wright is a journeyman player who isnt good enough to do this, but supporters should remember Wright is trying to play his best and it isnt his fault that Burley is picking him.
