"Roy Keane? He's alright really!"
Wednesday, 20th Nov 2013 20:31

Oh dear, Paul Green obviously has not swotted up on his Leeds United history as he paid a glowing tribute to new Ireland No.2 Roy Keane.

Keane was a shock choice to join Martin O'Neill in Dublin earlier this month, however the new Irish management team have made a fine start beating Latvia and drawing in Poland with Green involved in both matches.

However when asked about Keane, Green was positively gushing: "Yes - I think everyone looked up to him (Keane), really. He has won that many titles, he has been a great pro and a great player.

"It's been brilliant. He just said to stay behind the ball and break things up. It's always nice to get the perspective of a great midfielder like Roy."

Green, currently not featuring in Brian McDermott's 3-5-2 formation, is clearly loving life in the Irish camp even more so than under previous Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

He added: "With Trapattoni, his English wasn't the best, but you got out what you needed to get out of him.

"With Roy, he has played in that position and you take things in from such a legend. I did that and I felt I did a good job."

Unfortunately Green's eulogy of Keane is unlikely to be shared by many Leeds fans, who hate him following several high-profile spats with former Leeds favourite Alfe Inge Haaland.

Keane, pictured above in 1997 injured his anterior cruciate ligament following this challenge on Haaland, missing a year's football as a result, Leeds winning the game 1-0. Haaland remonstrated over a prostrate Keane, something the Irishman clearly resented. In April 2001 Keane was sent off for a vicious challenge on Haaland, who by then was playing for Manchester City.

Keane was later fined £150,000 for admitting in his autobiography he deliberately went out to harm Haaland. Unfortunately the popular Norweigan never really recovered from the damage to his knee and hung his boots up in 2003.

With Green somewhat down the pecking order, I'm sure his tribute to Keane will be long forgotten by the time he pulls on a Leeds shirt again!
