The Barry Bannan Master Class Match Thread
at 11:04 3 Jan 2026

I am still undecided on whether I can be asked to deal with a rail replacement service to get to a midday kick off to watch another dismal home performance against Sheffield Wednesday and Barry Bannan..

Maybe the way to handle playing against Bannan will be to man mark him out of the game. The less touches he gets on the ball the better chance QPR have to win this game.

I appreciate it is about opinions ,but Walsh better than Nardi, based on what?

From what I saw of him before his injury, he was nowhere near Championship level.

January transfer rumours
at 00:36 3 Jan 2026

I read about him on the BBC sports article on EFL players who could be on the move.

He seems to be a goal scoring midfielder and I instantly thought QPR need one of those given the lack of goals from midfield.

I don't know about his other midfield qualities but if he can make tackles and forward passes he can replace Varane in midfield or play as a number 10 behind Kone or Burrell. I know Chair can play the role, but we don't know whether he is fit or not (the club doesn't like to keep fans informed, presumably because it provides an advantage to the opposition).

OK I stand to be corrected.

It must have been a very soft target as he only achieved 1 goal and 2 assists before it was activated.

I know they are awful 0 goals and 0 assists. The same as Frey.

I don't like those chants either, even when we find their decisions frustrating.

I know the club issue statements about bad language etc, but I am not sure what action they can take when it is about 100 or so fans chanting those songs.

Retiring from football
at 23:56 2 Jan 2026

I had to give up playing football at 46 and have missed it every time I see a game being played.

It must be difficult for a lot of former players, especially those forced to retire through injury or health issues, because many struggle to accept it, especially in the first few years.

Is anyone else feeling a bit depressed this evening?

I am surprised that you can give them a pass for Portsmouth and WBA . Those were winnable games if QPR bothered to attack. Norwich have a habit of beating QPR and have better players as well as on a reasonable run under their new manager.

Having said that, the 1st half performance was terrible and the 2nd half immediately got worse (I didn't see it clearly, but why were Norwich awarded a free kick shortly after QPR kicked off - that led to the opening goal).

QPR just never got going in the 2nd half and like thousands of other fans I walked out after the 2nd and missed Mbenge's goal.

The last 3 games have certainly spoilt my mood over the festive period. These are normal QPR festive results and have been for decades and have got me wishing for a festive break as they do in other countries.

None of the players deserve this kind of abuse, but I agree with you that Smyth definitely doesn't. He gives everything when he plays (although yesterday he barely got going, but that might well have been partly down to that side of the pitch being in such a poor state - Norwich created nothing from that flank either).

Hopefully the fool who sent the abuse will be found and banned for life (if not prosecuted as well).

Gaffer on today's defeat
at 13:14 2 Jan 2026

True.

And it isn't just the issue of 1 point from those 3 matches, but the lack of attacking intent and shots on or off target. 2 yesterday, 0 against WBA and maybe 2 at Portsmouth.

The team selections and substitutions were baffling.

EDIT: Although if the availability of players is decided by medical and physios, then it might explain some of it. I have just watched MotD and according to the journalist Chelsea do a similar thing and Maresca quit because he wasn't happy with that level of interference.

Rather than it being a mentality issue (same as the last 4 seasons), can it be a management one?

He and the players have a game on Sunday in which they can maybe repair some of the damage they have done.

I was discussing this point with fans at a recent game.

We all know how pre season training and matches impact on a player's performance during the season and Frey missed all the fixtures as well as the training camp in France. We have seen his fitness and work rate suffer so far.

If there is a reasonable offer for him the club should sell him. If he isn't replaced, QPR could always recall Celar, who can't be any less effective than Frey had been. He might even link up well with Burrell or Kone.

Qpr paid for Dembele last season when they made his loan move a permanent one just before he got injured.

And as pointed out, transfer fees are now spread over the length of the contract to get around the 'fair play 'spending rules.

If there was money available on deadline day for Edwards and Dieng then that should be the case for this window.

Plus points today ,???
at 09:18 2 Jan 2026

He did look like a class act, but I am not sure why he didn't take all the corners. The near post one headed just wide in the 1st half should have been used more.

The game was rubbish as were the away games over Christmas and I expect more of the same for Sunday's game against the QPR nemesis Bannen and his Sheffield Wednesday team.

The only players with credit from that were possibly Nardi, Dunne , Hayden (unless knocked should have stayed on) and Madsen.

The attacking players were all poor including the subs whou did little to change that lethargic performance.

Oh and the officiating was in keeping with QPR's poor performance. At least the ref didn't fall for some of the Norwich sh1thousing that started early in the 1st half.

I'm glad he's signed a new deal. I guess this means he will start today against Norwich having been snubbed in the last few games.

I agree with you.

If JS chose to leave those two, who could have turned the game around, on the bench and instead opted to replace the full backs then he must be losing the plot.

And there is one from the Development squad in years gone by, that we let go for an undisclosed fee (probably 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps) now playing in the Premiership with Burnley... Josh Laurent.

If anything, Varane playing as he currently is, is more likely to see his value drop or even put off would be buyers .

Hayden or Field should take over for the next two matches. Preferably Hayden as Field can cover at left back if RND needs to be rested.

Too true.

Play Smyth even if ge doesn't sign a new contract. How much do they think they can sell him for in January? How much did they sell Manning for, or Bright O-S for? If memory serves me right they went for around £250k each. QPR will get more than that from the gate receipts at West Ham in the FA Cup.

Smyth has to play. He is fit, rarely gets injured and provides essential defensive support on either flanks. He also could have played Burrell's role last night, albeit not as well, but would have been far more effective than Field as the number 10.

That mirrors my opinion of Vale too.

He was rusty, but yesterday's cameo was pathetic and non league standard. I think he lost possession everytime the ball was played to him.

He may be better than he has shown so far this season, but definitely not as a right sided winger or midfielder.

The game wasn't lost because of Vale or even the other players, but it was down to the changes and as pointed out , the lack of partnerships within the team.

The defeat is solely down to Stephan's team selection.
