Putin and his butty Trump
at 18:31 17 Oct 2026

Unfortunately, this is the MAGA mindset that we absolutely do not want on this side of the Atlantic. The key point is that we cannot be confident that Putin will be content with Ukraine. He wants to re-create the Soviet Union (or if you prefer, the old Russian empire, which isn't greatly different). If Ukrainians feel betrayed then some will join his army, along with theiir technology. Apart from the potential negative consequences for us, there is morality - something the Russians don't seem to have.

Quite some way off our best today, though we could easily have come away with a point. I do wonder if we have regressed a bit in the last few games in terms of forward momentum and penetration, even though we had come off two wins. Hopefully, Matos can get us back on the front foot. Cardiif did us a favour today so that Boro won't be feeling much better than us.

New twist on the situation at the end of WW2 when many Germans were hoping the USA got there before the Russians?

I agree that Europe is highly culpable for under-investing in defence, but it is incorrect to say that the US would be stronger without Europe. Even in terms of what the US gains in miltary terms, the use of airfields in Europe is important for global l reach. Trump is looking more and more like a Russian asset, and what worries me is that checks such as the NDC, the Supreme Court and the FBI may already be compromised because of Trump appointees in key positions.

Sometimes, when the judge is named in these cases, I (fooolishly) day-dream of sending them a polite letter of dissent, but obviously this wouldn't do much good with Mo.

Agree this is welcome, but the about turn is typical of Trump's history of vacillating on key decisions. His supporters say he is playing 3-D chess.

Not at our best, but a really gritty three points. Well done Ronald! Is he building a new role as an impact sub? The downside is that we could be light in central defence after the injury and 5th booking. Must be a great day out for the travelling Jacks - safe journey home boys.

Resolution Foundation tax recommendations
at 07:07 13 Oct 2026

Pensioners in the cross hairs. If you are a Swansea West voter then this is what your MP probably thinks.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news

Policy Brief here:

https://www.resolutionfoundati

Main proposal that would disadvantage OAPs is to cut NI and raise income tax.

"Despite rhetoric to the contrary, we do not have a ‘runaway’ benefits bill in the UK. (…) There is little fat to trim from the overall spend without damaging living standards, risking a political backlash (…) … larger sums will be needed, and the natural place to look is the tax that raises the most revenue: Income Tax. Employed workers face a specific tax premium… (…) Because Income Tax also applies to self-employment, pension and rental income, the switch [NI down and income tax up] raises revenue by asking more of the self-employed, landlords and pensioners with taxable income, all of whom currently face lower tax rates than employees on the same income."

The most likely scenario is that the ethnic groups who occupy particular areas of a city will themselves become more visibly stratified by social class. For example, in Leicester there are muslim middle-class areas with impressive up-market houses. I 'm unsure whether South Asians who make up much of the Leicester population mix freely or if there are separate enclaves of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi residents. Sketty-Tycoch would be my guess if I had to predict where upwardly mobile Asians in Swansea will cluster. The reactions of indigenous neighbours will vary.

Edit. There was a radio report today saying that a recent survery found that 37% of respondents believed that European elites are deliberately allowing muslim populations to grow - which the pollster interviewed described as an obviously untrue conspiracy theory. I suppose that the Labour policiians of 1980 said something similar about people who predicted that the "Commonwealth and Pakistani" population of some large British cities would rise to around 30%.

The areas that I have noticed changing most are St Helen's Road/Sandfields and the Hafod, but apart from mosques/Islamic centres in those two places, there are those in Sketty, Brynhyfryd.and the Singleton Park University campus.

Much better second half and two excellent goals. My only moan is that I get worried when in a period when we are well on top we switch to a defensive mode and end up conceding chances, Norwich had two very good opportunities in the final minutes.

What stood out was that the police arrested the single joke offender at a recent anti-illegals demo - the man wearing the niqab - but didn't seem to arrest any of the several masked persons in the violent pro-Palestine disturbances in the video posted earlier in the thread.. The man restrained on the floor wasn't masked.

Disjointed was the word that I had in mind as well. We've had our chances, but also a lot of good positions where a sensible final ball would have produced a chance. Idah seems to be having one of those days and I expect an early substitution. Widell has lost possession in dangerous positions a few times in earlier matches and needs to learn not to overplay deep in his own half. Nether of our wingers has really looked teh part and that could be another area for changes. Great opportunity today to cement our position at the top, but we may well blow it.

We face a worsening situation that is not helped when politicians' promises are not accompanied by action. When one considers how politicians from the 1970s onwards consistently argued that those who predicted problems ahead were racist conspiracy theorists, it is no wonder a lot of older people who remember are really angry.

The police have obviously taken criticism for this. Times Radio today reports that the Met has issued a statement. The gist is that an arrest at the time when the offence is committed is not always appropriate but does not mean that action will not be taken. Officers will exercise judgement in the moment to decide on the best course of action. This they say is not two-tier policing.

Utter balderdash when you consider what happened in Dover and Gosport and compare that with London Palestine disturbances.

Edit: Found the press release.

(...)
“We will also be using powers under the Public Order Act requiring anyone in the protest area wearing face coverings to deliberately conceal their identity to remove them."

“We have seen debate about this issue following the student protests earlier this week, with the presumption that police will arrest anyone wearing a face covering."

“To be clear, we have the power under Section 60AA to arrest someone who refuses to remove a mask. And we will do so if we see groups of people who refuse and are covering their faces with the intention to hide their identity, intimidate and commit offences. That is unacceptable.:

“But for individual cases, officers must carefully assess why a person is wearing a mask and respond in a measured way. Where necessary, they will intervene and enforce the law, recognising that this may sometimes lead to conflict. That is the nature of policing in certain circumstances."

"On other occasions an arrest may not be the most appropriate course of action in that moment. This is not ‘two-tier policing’ - it is officers exercising professional judgement and acting proportionately based on the facts before them."

“There have been 35 large protests organised by the groups that make up the Palestine Coalition since October 2023. The majority who attend do so peacefully and lawfully, but we have seen arrests from a small minority across these protests for racially and religiously aggravated public order offences, for stirring up racial hatred and for supporting terrorist organisations."

“We will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime and other offending.”
