Atkinson joined Dale on loan in October 2007 following the worst injury crisis in the club's history. Indeed, he was brought in and played for the club on the same day that he met manager Keith Hill for the first time, as we were faced with a situation of every defender at the club being injured.

He's equally adept as both a central defender and as a right back, but his height will no doubt see the central role as being his long term position.

Atkinson has made nine appearances for the Reds before joining Dale. He's impressed when he's turned out for them and even won man of the match award in his first full ninety minutes for the club.

As well as featuring for Barnsley, he has had loan spells at Scarborough and Halifax Town. He spent most of the 2005-6 season with the Seadogs and he scored two goals in four appearances for the Shaymen last season.
