Goalkeeping Options
at 13:32 31 May 2024

I agree that loaning him out when fit is a good option and as he matures he has a good chance of being a first choice. Also agree that RM is hardly going to say he's awful but the best he's got.

My criticism is how he is bad at stopping shots, socially those from distance. The late strike (I think from Dan James again) that was in the bottom right hand corner that AM palmed behind for a corner is the carbon copy of what Bazunu has let in time and again. He has to get better at this type of situation (worryingly it points to his eyesight as he is always getting caught out from distance).

I think we need a new number one keeper for Bazunu to work behind when he's fit.

He is a super positive person and that is his leadership style. Anything other than a glowing description would be a signal you're out of favor. I think (but proabbaly it's more of a hope) he was keeping a positive spin on who he saw as his best of a bad choice in goal. It's clear that AM helped us into the premier league and was proabably playing for his next (and final big one) contract. With Wilcox moving on, I hope our obsession with man city u21 goalies burns out too - I know it predated him but it's been a woeful strategy so far.

Dean Henderson or Aaron Ramsdale would off the experience and solidity at the back that would allow the football RM wants to play even if they aren't the most gifted with their feet. If we could get either at the prices above we should bite their hands off. Given we threw close to 20 mn at Onachu and Sulemana, surely this would be a clear and sensible path to take. Also Bazunu would develop well behind the likes of one of these and may well prove himself a first choice in the future

I wonder what J W P honestly thought at 17.00 yesterday.
at 16:14 27 May 2024

We had to raise funds after being relegated and he was one of our salable assets. Sullemana, ABK, Onachu etc etc could only muster loan interest (or no interest for Sulemana) and we needed to lower weekly pay roll and raise funds having spent a lot last year in. I doubt JWP really wanted to leave but it was the right thing for the club at the time. We might get him back on loan with option to buy if the new West Ham manager doesn't see him fitting in... "I would" imagine that will irk at least one regular on here!

Is ramsdale available? RM was talking up Baz and saying he wants AM to stay too... I heard AM was on 70 or 90k a week depending on who's reporting. Surenly ramsdale can the in much more and would much rather him...

Bazunu looks like he's a center midfielder that isn't good enough to play first team football so they gave him a shot in goa. He's quite good, makes some saves and is great passing the ball, however, he's just not a natural 'keeper. McCarthy made a save to his lower left bottom corner toward the end of the game that would be a guaranteed goal vs Bazunu because he's not anticipating that shot and how to save it. We're two for two in bad goalie choices from man city's academy. Get a good 'keeper, keep Downes and get a good striker to work with Armstrong and Stewart and we should be able to compete very well...

Next season
at 17:33 3 May 2024

I read somewhere Downes is open to making the move permanent if we go up. However, with West Ham likely to move on from Moyes at the end of his contract, any new manager would proabably want to look at him pre season given how well he's played for us this season. I'd love him to sign full time.

We also have ABK returning with tail firmly between legs following limited game time and (yet more) injury trouble in Holland. If he's prepared to knuckle down and rein his ego back in, he and THB could be a good option, albeit a very young/inexperienced pairing.

Hopefully in 4 games' time this thread will no longer be a theoretical one......

2 years ago the FA said they'd have zero tolerance for pitch invasions. Be interesting if they take action on this especially if a player was injured. If they don't, then it will be a nod to other fans it's ok...

Penny for the thoughts of Joe Lumley

That doesn't make any sense. Effectively it says if a starting player falls ill/is injured after the team sheets are submitted, then only a player not deemed good enough by the manager to even make the bench HAS to start the game. That seems very counter intuitive unless it's to put off naming injured players in the starting 11 only to pull them at the last minute to disguise your starting team

What was Bazunus injury? The original line up had him in it and lumley on the bench. Bit of a knock to lumley to get leapfrogged by McCarthy.

However, I feel like we did just that bit less overpassing at the back which probably led to AM having a quiet game. I hope the manager saw that too and realizes that we don't need to overwork things at the back.

Also, teams just got into the habit of pressing high then shooting on sight vs Baz. Maybe it'll work in our favor they might be playing against a slightly adjusted system over the next 4 games...?

If we win all our last games we'll go up automatically. Play like we did in the first half and we'll win all 6. If we win the next three though, I think the pressure will be back on when we play Leicester and we don't seem to do well under those conditions. All we can do is hope however...

Is it all sunshine and roses for football players?
at 17:44 25 Mar 2024

I thought this was a very interesting read. It's very true that a lot of wealthy, successful people are not happy and that we should not equate money with happiness. The commonality through all of this is that there is no support or eduction for the players. They should be helped to understand putting money aside is critical and that injury will cut many careers very far short of their potential.

I can understand people not feeling sorry for them - it's one hell of an opportunity most of us would love to have (as I've said before, I'd play for saints for free if I was good enough!). Personally I do empathize that they often have smoke blown up them by agents, "friends" etc that just want their pound of flesh. When it all goes wrong no one is there for them and the "if only" thoughts would take a long to to recover from.

Also a good reminder the grass isn't always that much greener despite the Range Rover and big house showed in the Manning video.

What a great life football players lead
at 00:52 25 Mar 2024

First site that came up when I was intrigued as to what we are paying him.

There's a lot of high earners that have contracts up soon but we do need to go back up and have a good clear out. But, as a lot of folks have said, it's been enjoyable winning a lot of games in the championship. I guess that will only last as long as the parachute payments do though...

Spot on according to this:

https://www.capology.com/player/ryan-manning-35230/

It's a very appealing lifestyle. I wonder if it ever becomes "just a job" and the fun/privilege of being able to play football for a (very good) living fades away? I'd just like to been that good at football that I could have played for saints - would have done it for free!
