Nearest pub to where you live
at 10:30 2 Jun 2024

Watford is a bit of a wasteland for decent pubs. Bit of a wasteland for anything really even with the money pumped in but it’s been a few years since I lived there.

Loads of pubs down here in glorious Hove and one has a QPR landlord.

He’s dross and barely played for years. Would be very Begovic-y. Female fans would approve.

If I make it to that age I really doubt pensions will be a thing in 35-40 years. Probably scrapped under the guise of “putting more money back into your pocket”.

Pensions are officially a benefit and have been for some time.

It has its flaws but UBI is a policy I’m a big fan of. Replaces a lot of the admin associated with various benefits including pensions and removes the argument of work not paying when it’s below a certain level. Whenever it’s considered there’s a huge backlash though.

Like a lot of these things we have the US to thank. There’s nothing positive for the Tories to campaign on so their cheerleaders in the media/social media pump out this ‘they’re all the same’ nonsense and people are mug enough to believe it or want to believe it. It gives the Galloway rabble a similar stick to beat Labour with and completely ignores the bloke’s record before and during politics. It’s boring and predictable but it works.

Eze for England!
at 14:34 29 May 2024

There’s probably an exception to the rule I’m missing but City players don’t tend to play well for England. Foden is a wonderful player but rarely seems to be at the same level for England (off a small sample size) and Grealish seems to be having the flair coached out of him. When Sterling was doing well for them you wouldn’t see it a lot for England.

Walker I guess but then he’s quite un-Guardiola for a Guardiola team.

He played a few games for Luton towards the end of the season too. Looked great a few years back. 27, can play a few positions and brings a bit of pace we still lack. We’ve made worse signings.

A lot changes in 13 years. I think there’s a lot more appetite for something more representative now after the nonsense we’ve had in that time. Young people who would benefit more from a different system are far more politically engaged than I was at that age in 2011.

I wouldn’t say it’s a moan. There are big-spending teams the fans like. There were just quite a few knobheads in that squad who got dragged over the line by a mistake and some heroic defending.

I don’t really buy into this, especially with FPTP and binning FPTP would improve turnout.

I know Doyle played for us but can’t remember him doing anything at all. Apparently scored twice.

Zamora was woeful overall. Staggeringly poor Dykesesque goal return even in the second tier. Quite liked Onuoha but think that was more as a bloke than a player as he was often crap. Some personal issues IIRC with his mum dying unless that was someone else.

I won’t have a bad word said against Austin in that first spell though.

Plenty of ST holders buying £30 tickets and flogging them on too I assume as there are loads of them in the away ends too now. I think at a home game at the big clubs you have to accept it’s a global game now (though disgraceful 99% of local residents are probably never setting foot in the ground). Maybe I’m old-fashioned but away matches should be sacred.

Nothing will ever match old-fashioned grounds but as new megastadia go it’s by far the best. It’s what the new Wembley should have been.

I think (hope anyway) he meant that’ll be the rhetoric they go for which I expect it will be but there are somehow still people who buy it.

I think most would just rather avoid the embarrassment and have something cushy lined up.

Doubt he’s consulted any of the people he’d have to to get some idea of how this would work. Just nonsense made up off the back of a panicked meeting and maybe a couple of focus groups to desperately woo a few Express readers.

Do any of them ever really speak for any of us? There’s never been a perfect political party for me in my lifetime. I just pick the one that’s closest or, thanks to our archaic voting system, has the best chance of beating the one that’s least close.

Fortunately I now live in one of the places the Tories might as well not run in so it’s between Labour and Greens. Wasn’t a fan of the Greens anyway but less so now they’ve attracted an assortment of cranks.

Starmer isn’t exciting but then I don’t want politicians to be exciting. He’s achieved a lot in his life without being dealt a brilliant hand and it’ll be nice to just have a sensible adult in charge. It’ll need two terms to get even close to sorting out and I doubt he’ll fancy the second of those but I really hope the lot in now are done for a long long time.

The rats are deserting but hopefully we get a few big names crying in a leisure centre somewhere.
