Accrington
at 20:39 21 Aug 2010

I'd probably say that the teams were fairly evenly matched for the first 28 minutes although we weren't creating much but once Accy scored it was pretty much game over.

Goals one and two were down to poor defending. The first when Hamza was beaten on the byline and nobody went across to cover and the second when McConville was allowed all the time in the world to bring the ball down turn and shoot from the edge of the area.

The second half was atrocious and Accy could/ should have had more than 1.

Accrington showed how attacking football should be played. Running with the ball from midfield, lots of off the ball movement from the forwards and the ball played either to feet or into space. Our attacking ideas seemed to consist solely of hoofing it up to the front three and hoping one of them would score.

We didn't seem interested today - a typical example was when Emil chased a ball for 30 odd yards, beat the defender to it, turned and found that no-one had bothered to move up the pitch to support him. We didn't play as a team, passing and ball control were poor and the defense which was shambolic enough in the first half actually contrived to become worse in the second.

Normally, after a defeat you can point to one or two areas that cost you the game and should be worked on for next Saturday but today was so abject, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Simmo has got a lot of work to do before the Chesterfield game.

Surprisingly, once again we had more of the possession but that isn't much use if you don't do anything with it.

Thoughts so far based on 6 games (3 pre-season).

Veiga - Great shot stopper, can't kick, not afraid of coming for crosses but 50-50 as to whether he'll get anywhere near them. Will be bad news for fans of a nervous disposition but could be a legend in the making.

Wedgbury - Looks like a tidy playmaker. Good passer and prepared to run with the ball. Nice lad.

Hamshaw - For the first time in God knows how long we have someone who can deliver from set pieces. Moments of brilliance in open play as well. Doesn't seem to have much pace.

Chalmers - Haven't seen much of him, although he looks reasonable and looks like he'll get stuck in. I'm guessing he and Draper will be in competition to see who can get the first ban.

Butcher - I was expecting more from him than I've seen so far. Seems a little off the pace and not delivering the quality passes that I was hoping for.

Barnett - It's a big step up from Conference North and I think he's done well, particularly as he's being asked to lead the line. Got a decent shot and seems confident enough on the ball. Inexperience was evident on Saturday, but a promising start.

Mukendi - Reminds me of Paulo Wanchope. Arms and legs all over the place but somehow keeps the ball. Shots can burst the net or land in the car park. Was superb at Leicester and decent enough for the first hour on Saturday. Needs to work on his heading but is only 18. Could turn out to be a really exciting player to watch, assuming the moaners at the Moss Rose don't destoy his confidence.

Frustrating game today. Once we coughed up a soft goal early on, we were always going to be facing an uphill battle.

We settled down pretty well after that and we did play some neat football, Hamshaw and Mukendi in particular. But for all the possession and corners, we never really troubled their keeper. Pretty as it was, the slow build up meant that the Shrews had plenty of time to get bodies back and it was always going to be tough for the inexperienced Mukendi and Barnett to find a way through.

In the second half, we ran out of ideas and steam. When Butcher went off and the lively Wedgbury came on, we we did start to look a bit more threatening but as before the final ball into the box was poor.

Still far too early in the season to read much into what's happening so far, although we do need that first win to get the monkey off our backs.
