Clegg: Town Weighing Up Offer
Clegg: Town Weighing Up Offer
Wednesday, 10th Aug 2011 16:26 by TWTD.co.uk

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has revealed that the club are weighing up a bid for an unnamed player. The Blues chief also says there is still money for manager Paul Jewell to spend on more new additions this summer.

Clegg told TWTD that the bid has been made but no more than that: “There is an offer for one player at the moment but I’m not going to go any further. Will it lead to anything? I don’t know. It may do, it may not.”

Jewell is keen to continue to add to his squad with Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews a loan target and another right-sided central defender top of the list.

The chief executive says Marcus Evans will continue to give the Blues boss cash with each deal taken on its own merits rather than the club having a strict budget: “We’re not working to a particular budget. The owner has made it clear that he will back the manager.

“I think the manager has been incredibly savvy in terms of the players that he has brought in and I have no doubt that we will reap the rewards for that.

“If he feels that he needs to bring in more players, and he certainly does, then he knows that he enjoys the support of the owner and myself in that regard.”

Clegg is pleased with the club’s seven signings so far with Jewell taking a greater role in the negotiations than his predecessor Roy Keane: “I think we’ve done some good business this summer. Paul is very hands on in the club’s transfer dealings.

“It was always a three-person approach but I think the dynamics have changed slightly. I’m comfortable with that and between us we’re doing good business, we’re just doing it slightly differently than we were in the past.”

Jewell has clearly impressed Clegg since he took over after Keane’s sacking in January: “Paul’s a class act. We knew that when we appointed him. He’s one of only a handful of managers to get two clubs promoted to the Premier League.

“I think he’s doing a fantastic job. He’s a got a really good spirit up there at Playford Road. He’s got a really good coaching staff around him and is an incredibly impressive individual, who calls it very straight. What you see is what you get with Paul, and I like that.

“He made it clear in the interview that he wants to be involved across the board in all aspects of the club.

“We’re delighted with the appointment, it’s been really positive for the football club. He’s led us to some really good business and I’m confident in terms of what he can do with the football club to take us to where we want to go.”
