The argument that we should break the bank to keep him seems to be being led by Walter BoydForehead. Mama must stay whatever the price is a common statement. Walter's logic is led by the fact that with Sidibe developing nicely, we could have a real gem on our hands and we could be looking at a huge transfer fee incoming in the next couple of years which will more than cover what we are paying for him wages wise. |
The argument though that we should be cautious is led by Phil Sumbler. Phil points out that we have been down this road and we should err on the side of caution by making sure that we don't pay over the top for a player and find ourselves paying out money that the club cannot afford. |
Both are good arguments and both deserve credit. Dismissing either out of hand seems narrow minded and Walter could be right, but then again so could Phil be. |
And of course, as with most arguments, both camps are able to pick holes in the argument of the other side. Walter argues that by restricting what we are prepared to pay then we could lose Sidibe on the cheap and watch in exasperation as he makes a move from somewhere else for a large fee whilst Phil comes in with the argument that Mama may not reach his potential, or indeed, move backwards and we could end up paying for nothing wages wise. |
So who has the stringer argument? If I knew who was going to be right, then I wouldn't be penning this article. I would be in the Bahamas on the back of my guse lottery win last time there was a superdraw. And touching my bank balance up with eight score draws every Saturday. You get the picture, I am not Mystic Meg or anything similar so I don't know who will be right. |
What I do know is that if you asked me to side one way or the other I would hedge towards Phil's side of the argument and urge the club not to throw full caution to the wind and meet any demands that Mama may have. I have seen huge contracts before and the club had paid for them in more ways than one. I would say we are in a period where stability is the key and you pay it to one person, the next wants a similar deal. |
But then you come back to Walter's argument that we may not meet his demands, lose him on a Bosman and someone else cashes in. The argument is endless and all I do is thank my lucky stars that it is not me that is making the decision. |
