Fernandez Targets Newcastle Win

Federico Fernandez was one of the outstanding players in last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and now he has targeted a win over Newcastle at the Liberty on Saturday as the perfect way to follow it up.

It is probably unfair to single out Fernandez above anyone else on Saturday but he was a major reason why the likes of Diego Costa did not get much change out of the Swansea defence.

There was of course a penalty shout against him in the first half but there was clear evidence that he got the ball first and that the referee was right to award the corner rather than the penalty that the home side were screaming for.

Fernandez made his debut for the Swans at Stamford Bridge last season and this time around he saw his team mates keep up the pressure for the 90 minutes having faded away in the second half last time around.

"It’s a very good result and a very good start to the season,” said the Argentina international. “It was a good game for us at a difficult stadium, but the team did incredible.

“In the second half, after the sending off for Courtois, we controlled the game and performed well.

“They are the champions, they’re a very good team, who are very good on the counter attack. For us, we showed great concentration throughout the game.

“We’re very happy because it gives us confidence for the season, especially for all of the new players.

“We will work hard for next weekend’s game against Newcastle. This point is important, but we need to make sure we follow up with a win next Saturday.”
