The Old Or The New?

There are still some people though, including myself, who miss The Vetch. Therefore I thought I'd have a look at how both stadiums compare.FACILITIES Now without any doubt the facilities at The White Rock are far superior to those at The Vetch. Anyone in their right mind can see that! From the ability to offer hospitality boxes to the legroom for those who like me "slum it" in the East stand. There's no real contest. So this one is a no brainer.ATMOSPHERE I think that one of the main concerns that most supporters would have had regarding the move would have been whether we could transfer the atmosphere at The Vetch to The White Rock. Now there are those who will say that, in the last couple of years, the atmosphere at The Vetch was not as good as it used to be. Personally, I don't buy into that. Certainly there were a few games where it possibly wasn't great but on the whole, it was far better in the last 2 and a bit seasons there than at any time since we were in the top division. So has this atmosphere been transferred to The White Rock? On the whole I guess I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of noise generated at the Rock. However, there seems to be large parts of games were the crowd are fairly quiet. I put this down to the comfort zone that people fall into in an all seater stadium. I have to admit to being guilty of this myself as during the Forest and Oldham games I found myself just sitting there and having a chat and not really focussing on the game that was unfolding in front of me. I also feel that so far, the White Rock has not been quite as intimidating as The Vetch in full voice. Although that's not to say it won't reach those levels.TICKETING The ticket fiascos that Stadco have presided over in our short time have been well documented. These do seem to be clearing up slowly but for me the biggest test is yet to come. That is when we get a big home cup game and the Season Ticket holders want to purchase their own seat. This will undoubtedly be a challenge for Stadco, especially when dealing with those season tickets holders who do not live in the immediate area! However, despite these problems, I still regard the current set up as far superior to a couple of old ladys, a terraced house and a biscuit tin! And before all you romantics go off at how much better it was then, can you imagine asking back then for a seat in a specific part of a stand and to be able to see on a monitor exactly where that seat is? No, thought not!STEWARDING Now I'll be honest here. I've never had the greatest of relationships with stewards. Anyone who knows me will probably be aware of the time I was carried out of the North Bank with a steward under each arm after a one man sit in protest following another home defeat during Hollins' relegation season. Although at no point in time did I stand on the yellow lines!!!

Since moving to The White Rock, all the stewards appear to have gone on a compulsory "How to act like a little Hitler and get away with it" course. In fact, the name of the stadium couldn't be more ironic. "Come to the Liberty Stadium - And make sure you sit down, shut up and put out that fag!" Liberties? They're certainly taking them!CATERING The catering at the Vetch was hardly the best looking back. You basically had a choice of a cold pasty, a cold burger or a cold hot dog. If you fancied a half time pint then unless you started queuing in the Mel Nurse bar at least 15 minutes before half time you had no chance. And if you were lucky enough to get there in time, often it would have to be drunk outside Fine in August and May but a bit chilly in the depths of winter. At the Rock, the choice of a cold pasty has been replaced by the opportunity to buy cold fries. Not great progress really! Although the half time pint is a more enjoyable experience as its usually possible to get one if you leave a couple of minutes before half time and there's the added bonus of it being indoors so no more gloves needed to drink beer. One improvement that could be made though is some sort of queuing system instead of the force your way to the front and wave a money in the air routine that has to be done now.ACCESSIBILITY When the Council proposed the plans to build the stadium in Landore I think most people will have been concerned at the potential traffic problems, especially as no train station was to be built. Getting from Neath to the Vetch was a fairly straightforward process. Arrive at Neath train station 5 minutes before the train was due, find out the train was 10 minutes late, pop across the road to Weatherspoons for a quick pint, see the train pull in early while half way though pint. Sprint across the road and over the footbridge and just about catch the train. Spend next 10 minutes on train to Swansea trying to get breath back. Every bleeding week! Then a simple walk down to the Vetch or, if it was raining, a taxi. The location of The White Rock makes a train journey from Neath fairly pointless as the train goes straight past it. Generally no one is up for driving so that leaves the taxi option. So far very few problems have been encountered with this and a 2 o'clock drop off at the Landore Social club has proved pretty successful. No real traffic to speak of and cheap beer! Taxi back after a quick visit to the Riverside Lounge after the game and Bobs your uncle. And at a cost of only a couple of quid each way. For every one else, there's the choice of a bus service that I'm told runs fairly regularly past the ground, the park & ride system which drops you off across the road or the parking facilities offered by several business near the stadium. Although the accessibility to the stadium is nowhere near as problematic as I for one expected, I think The Vetch will have to come out on top for this. After all, it was only a 10 minute walk from the train station, a 2 minute walk from the quadrant bus station, several large car parks close by and lots of street parking. So that's it and the final scores are: I'm sure you'll all disagree!! Neath Jack
