Col U Matches PL 2023-24 - Running Totals
at 17:49 24 May 2024

Everyone thought we were going to get at least the point we needed to guarantee safety against a badly out of form Crewe steam. Once again, we probably should've won the game but a late Crewe equalizer meant the last few minutes of a our disappointing season were played out in an almost bizarre fashion.

I had, somewhat embarrassingly, already secured the title in my own competition and burnsieespana was guaranteed to finish runner up. Spot on 1-1 predictions from gerry_us and wessex_exile helped them climb to third and fourth respectively as mfb_cufc dropped down to fifth. At the other end of the table oxfcolu stopped predicting some time ago which meant that durham_exile's blind optimism and a lack of Col U victories led to him finishing last of the active players.

A big thanks to everyone for taking part. I only set this competition up to replace the Interactive Predictions, that then made a return, and as I've struggled to keep up with the admin side this is likely to be it's first and only season.

Work has started on the pitch and is ongoing. Lots of activity and machinery at the stadium today.

How long do you reckon we are giving the players we've offered deals to? Seems like they've had a while to make their minds up.

The only team we beat in the top seven ended up being the one who went up through the Play Offs. Does mean another local game lost for our poor travelling supporters.

Congratulations CUFC Ladies!

What an incredible season for our U's ladies. Really good for the club to have a women's team again. Hopefully they'll get an opportunity to play at the stadium next season. I know Danny's daughter is a promising footballer so there might be more of an attempt to make the ladies more connected with the club as a whole.

I guess there was no way around this but I do feel that the league they were in was probably not great for them or the other teams in the division. Massive wins or defeats aren't ideal for development or enjoyment. Always a difficult one but maybe common sense could've prevailed and they could've been allowed to start higher up the pyramid, would've been better for all involved.

I think Eastman has been in and around the England C squad this season too.

Ollie Kensdale? He's earned rave reviews playing for Southend. I wouldn't be disappointed to see him come back.

I'm not sure he's referring to a footballer unless it's a female one.

Can we afford Clarke-Harris? Probably has his sights set a little higher.

What about Alex Bass for our next goalkeeper?

Been on loan at Wimbledon from Sunderland. Danny had him at Portsmouth I believe.

Wembley
at 12:03 13 May 2024

With Crawley's decimation of MK meaning they are heading to the League Two Play Off Final at Wembley there will only be one club amongst the current 92 that has never made a Wembley appearance.

We join them on a very short list of league clubs who haven't appeared at the "new" Wembley.

Also spare a thought for Solihull Moors who have been beaten in a penalty shootout at Wembley twice in the space of a week.

The retained list would give us a decent starting XI in my opinion, providing everyone is fit of course.

Smith

Egbo Kelleher Hall Iandolo

Fevrier Mingi Read Edwards

Hopper Tovide

There are a few players you could swap in and out depending on formation and personal preference but, for me, this side should be good enough to be competitive at this level.

With options taken up, new signings and loan signings I'd imagine there's probably at least six players that will be added to the group and you'd expect the majority of them to be challenging for a starting spot. I still believe in this group of players, they just need confidence, momentum and a belief they should be winning football matches.

"On behalf of the club, we have tried to make some difficult decisions on players that we think a lot of as people. I am sure you will join us in wishing them success in their careers moving forward."

Sporting Director Dmitri Halajko thanked the players for their efforts during what has been a challenging season, saying: "Of course the season didn't go the way we all wanted it to, but it was not down to lack of effort and will on any player's part."

"For all the players leaving us this summer, including the players that have been on loan with us, we thank them for their time with us and wish them well in their future football journeys."

Correct. They went from 21st to 2nd. Across the same two seasons Barrow went from 22nd to 9th and Carlisle 20th to 5th.

Doncaster finished 18th last season, were rock bottom after seven matches this season and are probably favourites to go up right now.

Next season I was hoping Mingi would become the holding midfielder we so desperately need. He has all the attributes to be excellent in that role. When Garner's Col U looked good Skuse or Ashley were in that role and then they both left and were never replaced which left us too open and too easy to score against.

Dave Huzzey is back at Maldon and Tiptree as first team manager. Is that alongside his role as Transition Coach at Col U?

Will take some persuading and a fair bit of cash I should imagine. I fully expect him to join another League One club after his release from Portsmouth. His relationship with the Cowley's might be enough to sway him and it would definitely be a move I would welcome though.

From the article in the Colchester Gazette I don't think too many of last season's squad will be here next season, even the ones currently under contract.

And Gavin Massey released by Port Vale. Maybe we could sign a whole team of former players. Probably wouldn't be the youngest though.
