Never been to Jaywick but have seen it listed as the worst place to live in the UK a couple of times. Is it that bad? |

Except we've actually been accused of being too defensive/conservative and Southgate of picking favourites and players not in form. Reason we didn't win the last Euros according to many. So he picks in form players, leaves out some favourites and gets slaughtered anyway. |

That was an absolutely ridiculous hit, shame it counted for nothing. It appeared to be still gathering pace when it hit the net, unbelievable strike. |

Well she had the appearance and demeanor of a drunk person. If she wasn't that's worse! |

Her of the pissed up "stand up and fight" rant? Jesus, the cupboard really is bare. |

Agreed and they aren't going to want to get injured in a warm up game either. The result means as little as it would have if we'd won 8-0. |

I would argue the premier league, or certainly the top half of it, is a higher level than international football where it isn't possible to simply buy a strong team from various countries. |

Might be a good time to remember that Argentina lost their first game of the world cup against Saudi Arabia. Or maybe we're just rubbish 😀 |

Media shouldn't really have a viewpoint, it should report facts, challenge obvious lies and give people a chance to form opinions based on reliable information. I know that will never happen but that's how it should be. Your words "if a story is true". Completely agree, but when said story is then deliberately manipulated to create a narrative that is a problem. You can't honestly claim the Mail just publishes factual stories with no attempt to influence the views of its readers. Instead you have a very clever form of mind control pushed by wealthy owners only interested in protecting and enhancing their own positions. Its got to the point now where general living standards are falling and life expectancy for the first time ever I think is going backwards, so clearly does not benefit the majority. Meanwhile the super rich get richer. Immigration is of course a hot issue and certainly has its problems. Governments have used it to prop up economic numbers and try to make themselves look better, but there is a price to pay and the numbers I've heard have been accepted in the UK over the last couple of years are staggering. But lets not forget who has been in government the last 14 years (voted in last time with a mandate to control borders), exactly the people the Daily Mail and similar publications would have wanted in government. Immigration equals cheaper labour, that is what is really behind it and they don't care how it affects everyday people. The problem is when things like immigration are viewed as the cause of all failings when there are far bigger fundamental problems driving a lot of society's problems, not least rampant corporate greed and corruption that seems to go largely unchallenged. Certain parts of the media focus on immigration all the time to distract from these issues and to be fair they are very good at it. Social media has only added to this. If I scroll through tiktok for example, I'm guaranteed to see Farage, videos of high streets and islamic people in those streets with "this is not England any more" type slogans in big lettering etc. I don't subscribe to any of those views, yet still see a lot of this stuff. God only knows how much of it you'll see if you are a regular visitor to right leaning pages. In contrast I don't see much left wing stuff. A bit but nowhere near the same volume. Probably 80/20 in favour of right leaning content. Left leaning papers I can think of are the Mirror and maybe the Guardian. On the other hand, Times, Sun, Mail, Express, Telegraph, Star all right wing to various extents. The Murdoch empire makes no secret of its leanings and controls far too much of it all. Not really a level playing field. [Post edited 7 Jun 2:10]

Agreed, Brown is a smart operator and appears to have integrity. But he's not a charismatic charmer with funny hair who can get elected with zero credentials and then unsurprisingly make a complete arse of the job. |

Fair point, but the overall media is so right leaning that it's only really benefitting one ideology. |
| Forum Reply | General Election Thread at 00:47 7 Jun 2024
But if people hear the same arguments for long enough they start to become truth to them. The tabloids which is what most ordinary people read are heavily biased to right wing views and are very skilled at promoting those ideas. |

Grealish also seems a bit too fond of going out on the lash. Players like him, Rashford, Sancho, Henderson etc would have walked into every England squad in the past. The fact they don't now shows how much we've improved. |

Its as good as rugby league can be. A load of the best players from the best competition desperate to beat each other. Far better than anything you will see in the rugby league world cup for example. |

Tbf, with FPTP this has always been the case. Parties winning by a "landslide" with around 40% of the vote. |

Luckily for Starmer, Sunak is no better when it comes to charisma. Charisma shouldn't matter when electing a PM, but sadly does. I think people forget how good Blair was when he started out and he certainly had plenty of charisma. Power does strange things to people though. It gets lost in the boring "war criminal" narrative that has emerged around him. A war that was backed by the opposition at the time plus conservative governments in the US and Australia, yet is used as a stick to beat Labour/Blair with. If anyone can show me the tories vehemently protesting against it at the time, I'd love to see it. [Post edited 5 Jun 2:39]

You are right, but even as far back as Blair Labour could not get elected without becoming tory lite, thanks mainly to the largely right wing UK media. They had to abandon the Kinnock, Foot type leader and get posh boy Blair in with his nice suits to win in 97. And that was after nearly 20 years of the tories being in govt. Sad state of affairs but until a fair and unbiased media exists, which will properly never happen, nothing will change. I reckon as a minimum these newspapers and media websites should have to prominently display the fact they are supportive of certain political parties, a bit like the warnings on cigarette packets that disclose something which should be obvious to everyone but clearly isn't. |
