Big weekend for Southampton boxers
at 23:03 11 May 2024

What a brilliant performance from Ryan Garner. Contender for fight of the year as OWTS rings round York Hall from all the Saints fans there.

So all 3 of the Southampton boxers fighting tonight remain undefeated.

A routine points win takes Barney-Smith to 10-0 and up to #8 in the UK Super Featherweight rankings.

The Ryan Garner fight should be on around 10pm.

Three teams that got promoted are straight back down
at 21:06 11 May 2024

Luton fans will be pleased with their team's efforts this season. For a small club with a limited budget, which was a non-league team 10 years ago, they did well. I think Rob Edwards is a good manager.

Nobody said it's easy but Bournemouth have managed to establish themsleves in the top flight. It was a very weak Championship last season, as shown by the fact that the 3 promoted teams came straight back down and the promoted teams this season were from League One and the PL.

The teams that go up this season won't all come straight back down again.

Saints' fan Lewis Edmondson has already beaten Pompey fan Joel McIntyre in Cardiff tonight, to go 9-0. That should take him close to the top 10 light heavyweights in the UK.

The Barney-Smith fight is coming up at around 8pm.

Everton Loaned More Money

It's crazy that Everton are still negotiating with 777. If they can't afford to pay Standard Liege players' wages, how on earth do they think they could afford to pay Premier League players?

Time For The Spirit Of Southampton Football Club
at 11:23 2 May 2024

Talking of the spirit of Southampton, it's great to see there are only a few hundred standing places left in Blocks 40-45 of the new Northam Red Wall. Block 46 in the corner looks like being the last to sell out but they should leave a few places for individual matchday sales anyway. Looking forward to seeing the much improved home support next season.

Sports Republic's priority. I remember Ankersen saying that Göztepe were a bigger club than Southampton, and subsequently they have turned them into a top flight club and us into a 2nd tier one, which is where they see us in the general scheme of things.

Desperate Tories - or tactical masterstroke?

Part of the hidden agenda of Brexit appears to have been to replace EU workers in areas like the NHS and residential care homes with cheaper workers from Africa and Asia. Hence the current NHS recruitment campaigns in Nigeria and Pakistan. More will be needed to take care of the physically and mentally disabled people we are going to bring in from Rwanda.

Bournemouth are level on points with Chelsea. They have become an established Premier League team. The secret? They have recruited wisely to build a team rather than buying a bunch of youngsters for their potential resale value. Of course, they have a good spine, spearheaded by Solanke, whose goals have got them into the top 10.

The main investment should always be in the spine of the team and that's where Bournemouth have spent their big money, whereas we recruit loads of attacking midfielders, presumably because we think there is more profit to be made out of selling them.

I don't think he's interested in their all round improvement; just their passing stats. I assume all they do in training is pass the ball around endlessly.

Every team will bully us because we have such a weak midfield. In fact, physically, this is just about the least imposing team we've ever had. Important factors like this have all been overlooked because the only thing that matters is the passing stats. They are what got Martin this job, not results of football matches.

The most important thing when building a team is to have a strong spine: a tall, experienced goalkeeper in his 30s, a tall, imposing central defender, a strong tackler in central midfield, who intimidates the opposition, and a goal poacher up front, preferably one who can score with headers. These all seem to have been ignored, with preference given to small players who can make short passes to each other.

They'll need special accommodation and place an extra strain on the NHS. This farcical Rwandan scheme is going to cost an absolute fortune. To think, the French offered to let the UK have a processing centre for asylum seekers on the French coast and our government turned it down because they thought a 'stop the boats' campaign would win them votes.

Saints had the worst goalkeeper in the PL last season in Bazunu and Leeds had the 2nd worst, Meslier. Sticking with them has cost us both automatic promotion.

What we both really needed was to replace these youngsters with proven goalkeepers in their 30s. That doesn't include McCarthy, of course, who is just a proven failure.

A win would be a morale booster. But, our games v Stoke are often dour 0-0 affairs, although with McCarthy in goal that's only going to happen again if Stoke don't get a shot on target.
Maybe Stoke won't bother today and we'll win 2-0, which will still require at least 20 attempts at goal from us or a couple of own goals.

To win 7-0 we'd require a world record breaking number of attempts at goals - 70+ - or, alternatively, a world record number of own goals and, of course, we'd still need Stoke not to have a single shot on target.

Does that mean we'll just be swapping our asylum seekers for theirs or does it mean they will send us an equivalent number of Rwandans they want to get rid of?
