Pompey matchwinner: I wasn't good enough last week but the boss showed faith in me

Paddy Lane says he was delighted John Mousinho put him back in the Pompey starting line-up at Northampton - so soon after a performance he said 'wasn't good enough'.

The winger scored twice as Mousinho's men won 3-0 at Sixfields - their second away win in a week following the home collapse against Blackpool.

Lane said he was pleased to repay the manager's faith with two of the goals that put Pompey back on top of the league ahead of next Monday's huge home clash with Bolton.

Lane told the club media: 'I was disappointed with my last start. I’m my own harshest critic and know I wasn’t good enough against Blackpool. But the gaffer put his trust in me again – albeit in a different position on the left – and I’m buzzing that we’ve got the win.

'We work on runs in behind a lot of the time and I saw the keeper running out for my first goal. I knew I was going to get there first. I just decided to put it over him and thankfully, it went in. It was great that it happened right in front of our fans.

'They made so much noise and it really drove us on – we could hear them right behind us throughout the game.

'For the second it was breaking nicely and I was screaming at Robbo that I was open. I took a touch and put it in. It was an amazing feeling to see it hit the net – if you could bottle that, then I would pay so much for it!

'If we’re ruthless enough, then we know we can beat anyone in this league and I thought we could have scored even more. I think everyone could see just how cold it is, though, and Northampton did well to get the game on, so fair play to them.'
