Richard Montague appointed as football director at Swansea City : Joel Cotterill latest

As we have indicated over the last few weeks the new football director at Swansea City is Richard Montague. A date to join the club is yet to be set, but it is expected to be in the next few weeks.

Montague, still at Notts County has been seen at Fairwood (the Swans training centre) on numerous occasions this month and in January prompting speculation. We confirmed this in our recent reports. It was Dafydd Pritchard who reported this an hour or so ago.

Here ⚽️ Montague on the menu

His actual role is one of overseeing numerous areas of the club including analytical recruitment which has worked to an extent at the Swans in recent times. Montague was given the nod by new board member and financier, Brett Cravatt who specialises in this area as well. Montague will bring some knowledge of the game in the lower leagues but via the company Football Radar will lay his real strengths. He has been with that company for fourteen years and six with Notts County. Both are owned by the Notts County brothers, Alexander and Christoffer Reedtz. As we know Montague has worked with Luke Williams at Notts County and has been allied to Chairman, Andrew Coleman for around sixteen months. The true detail of Montague’s salary is yet to be known but he won’t be just a football director. We also beleive in time he will join the Swansea board. His analytical role will be crucial, and his reach spreads across the world.

It is without doubt this appointment which has taken some while in negotiation has preserved Luke Williams status as Swansea City head coach. We now expect him to remain until the end of the season at least. The appointment most certainly relied upon Williams being in situ. All the Swans need to do now is replace head of recruitment Martin Hodge, or is this a combined role diluting another post at the club ?

More updates as we get them.

⚽️ In other news Joel Cotterill explains why he wanted to stay at Swindon Town in January despite a potential recall. "It was close. I think that the situation with Matt Grimes going was unexpected from the club and the fans. But I spoke to my agent and they said that it was potentially a late option but their (the Swans) preference was for me to stay here and continue playing as many games as I possibly can. I couldn’t agree with them more, I wanted to stay here to progress myself; I went out on loan last year but I didn’t quite have the experience that I wanted. This year has helped me massively. I would not say that it was a tight call but it was a possibility and I am happy with the decision for me to stay here and that the gaffer, Ian Holloway wanted me to stay here.”
