Southampton Keeper Makes Move To North West

Saints have agreed a season long loan deal for one of the Goalkeeping squad as they look to trim their squad for the Championship.

Accrington Stanley have announced that they have secured the services of Saints goalkeeper Ollie Wright on a season long loan.

They seem pleased to have made the signing and he follows Zach Awe who spent the first half of the season the Lancashire club last season, before he failed to drink his milk and was forced to return back to Southampton at the end of January after suffering an injury.

So Ollie Wright follows in his footsteps and Saints will be hoping that he too will play regularly.

With a plethora of Keepers at St Mary's at the moment, Saints will be hoping that Wright's step up to the Football league might be another step forward for the 22 year old who has gradually moved through the non league ranks with loan spells at Worthing, Yeovil & Solihull Moors and now to the Football league with Accrington Stanley.

It's rare for a keeper to make the breakthrough into clubs above Championship level before their early 20's and comparisons can be made between Wright's career path of gaining experience as he moves up the football pyramid and that of Gavin Bazunu who after a season at Portsmouth on loan in League One was thrown into the Premier League with Saints, behind one of the most chaotic defences in our relegation season of 2022/23.

He clearly wasn't experienced enough to cope and it has seen him struggle with confidence and getting his career back on track, goalkeepers more than any position have to have great confidence and Bazunu's has not been helped by the situation he found himself in.

The criticism he receives from some supporters has not helped and older fans will liken it to when Tim Flowers joined the club in 1986 and initially did not cover himself in glory, but after 3 years started to blossom.

Hopefully that might well be the case for Gavin Bazunu and Ollie Wright.
