The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes
at 10:43 28 Apr 2024

The Cowleys obviously have a lot of time for big John, but he’s never going to be the instinctive prolific goal scorer we need. Nor I fear will Tom Hopper, but both bring much more to the team, even if scoring goals is literally their job. With his contract up, I suspect it’ll be head over heart and John will be let go, obviously with everyone’s best wishes and gratitude.

The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes
at 09:43 28 Apr 2024

As suggested on the matchday thread, let’s kick off the traditional summer transfer speculation. I’ll start with our current loanees. I doubt Palace would release Owen Goodman, and if they did, would we want him or even be able to afford him? Of the rest, I’d definitely like to see Alastair Smith and maybe Riley Harbottle sign if they were released. As for the rest, they’ll be heading back to make room for new choices.

Expect the real Colchester United to turn up at the JCS for historic victory
at 21:04 27 Apr 2024

And that's a wrap folks, we can all rest easy for another summer.

Ironically typical that we'd end with another 1-1 (well done Gerry btw), and as frustrating as it was to concede again so late in a game, it was kind of hilarious watching Crewe pass it around at the back for the final few minutes, with the U's doing nothing to try and stop them. Me and Alfie had left Brisbane Road by then, but from the clips I've seen, it was reminiscent of those last seven minutes after Orient's relegation match had been 'abandoned'.

So, on to next season, a big clear out anticipated, and a genuine promotion challenge expected - you listening Danny?

What's all the fuss about?

But then, here's the counter argument - (big) IF we go down, will it change our support for the U's? Certainly not mine. Without doubt we'll be one of the favourites for an immediate return, and depending on how the various play-off matches are concerned, there'll probably be some tasty looking awaydays too.

Definitely Aldershot, Eastleigh, Maidenhead, Daggers, Wealdstone, Woking, Ebbsfleet and of course the Seaweed, maybe also Barnet and/or Bromley, and definitely one from Chelmsford, Worthing, George's Maidstone or Braintree. And who doesn't love a trip to Yeovil?

On the flip side, with FGR already gone, if Sutton join them, can anyone realistically see either of them getting back in the football league any day soon, or even ever?

LOL - last time was a blast, given we were (one of) the biggest fish in a very small pond, but it still took two goes to escape. This time around, with the National League awash with well set up fully professional former league sides, and still only two slots available for promotion, it will be a much tougher ask to get out.

Mind you, thank god it's not three places up for promotion, or we'd be well and truly f'cked right now.

Who gives a toss?
at 21:39 25 Apr 2024

You're probably not wrong, but just as an update, W5 not available, W4 now sold out, E5, 6 and 7, S1 and 2 and W6 on the alert list, and E3 opened up in anticipation of demand. Doubt it'll be a complete sell-out, but it's looking like another good crowd for Saturday.

48 hours for final moment of 2023/2024 season

Can't do the maths easily, so let's just say two sleeps to go before the most important game in the U's recent history. Not sure how much sleep I'll actually get though...

LOL - incidentally, the ‘limited seats left alerts’ are starting to appear for Saturday. E5, E6, S2, W4 and W6 now close to selling out.

We would in that scenario, as the next measure is number of games won, we’re on 11, the best Sutton can get if they beat MK is 10.

The other dimension is Crewe. Anyone who plays for a point, us included, invariably gets what they deserve - nothing. How willing will they be to risk all pushing forward for three points when just one is enough? I expect both sides going hell for leather to get in front in the first hour or so, but if neither side is by then, maybe less so after that?

Being the fair weather fan that I am, if we were safe I was going to spare myself a fourth Saturday on the trot travelling to support the U's, but we f'cked that up last night, so ticket in the South Stand now purchased. I'm now covering a cardboard cut-out trophy in tin foil to be ready for the "yay - there are two teams worse than us" celebrations.

Which League Two clubs have impressed you this season?
at 20:20 19 Apr 2024

Without a doubt, of those I've seen in person, FGR by a long chalk followed by Crewe. The former was the first time in as long as I can remember I left before the final whistle, albeit it was only when they announced 9 more minutes of the torture, and me and Alfie had a lift waiting outside. Crewe I shared the misery with Durham, and he's not wrong, we could still be playing now and not have scored - it was that infuriating, and against a distinctly average Crewe too.
