Saints V Hull Head To Head

A quick look at Saints record at home to Hull.

The first though of most Saints fans wouldbe that Hull havent been frequent visitors to this part of the woods, however although thats ben the case in recent years, with only the a solitary League Cup game at the Dell in 84/85 in between our promotion to the top flight in 77/78 and our three seasons of meetings after being relegated in 2005, its easy to make that assumption.

In total we have had 23 seasons of League meetings, but most ofthese came in the 1920's and 30's with a few more in the 50's.

Last time at St Mary's was 8th December 2007 when Saints triumphed 4-0 at that stage of the season it looked like Saints might push on and flirt with the play offs, but we soon went into freefall and it was Hull who actually went up to the Premier via the play off's, in fact our record at St May's is not great with Hull drawing two and losing only that solitary game.

In 1984/85 Hull visited the Dell in a then Milk Cup game, 2 goals from Steve Moran and one from Joe Jordan gave us a 3-2 win, but that last second Hull goal made sure that the second leg at Boothferry Park would be far from comfortable, in the end though Saints hung on for a 2-2 draw after leading twice through Moran aand Danny Wallace.

Our four seasons of League competition in the mid 70's would be just about remembered by older Saints fans, however like the Noughties counterparts, there would be mixed results with two home wins for Saints with the other two being draws, prior to these games the last league meeting was in 58/59 when Saints won 6-1, although ironically enough it would be Hull who would be promoted whilst Saints languished in mid table in the old division three.

We have to go back to 1950/51 for Hull's last win in Southampton, when after the fire brigade had pumped water from the pitch to enable the game to go ahead, Hull then sank us 3-2 in front of Earl Mountbatten no less. Hulls only other wins on our home turf came in back to back seasons in the mid 1920's.

Games against Hull always seem to feature goals,no matter what era they have been played in, our last three fixtures against the Tigers have resulted in a 5-0 win for Hull at the KC Stadium, 4-0 to us at St Mary's and 4-2 to us at Hull, lets hope that Tuesday night see's more goals as long as its us that does the scoring.
