Murphy Signs For Swans

Murphy Signs Swansea Contract

Murphy Signs Two Year Contract

Murphy was released by Manchester City during the course of the summer and had declared his intention to find first team football elsewhere. He played for the Swans for 45 minutes in last Friday's 6-0 win over Port Talbot at Victoria Park and Brian Flynn has been quick to sign up the youngster after current first choice Roger Freestone picked up an injury during that same game.

Murphy has been given the option of a second year beyond his one year contract (whatever that means!) and will travel with the Swans to both Bradofrd this weekend and to Holland next week.

Flynn has already stated that the person that impresses him most in pre-season will line up in goal against Bury on August 9 which could spell problems for long term first choice Roger Freestone with his current injury expected to keep him out for up to three weeks.

Flynn said in the club statement "Brian was offered the chance to stay at Manchester City but he turned them down because he wanted to prove himself as a first-team goalkeeper in the Football League and he will get a chance to do that at Swansea. Goalkeeper is just like any other position. It's about first past the post. Whoever shows up best in pre-season will be in the team when we play Bury on August 9. It was set up last week when Brian had a good look at us and liked what he saw."

Swansea fans after the Port Talbot game were not as impressed as Flynn with one fan declaring the young keeper "the worst that he had ever seen in his time as a fan" Personally, I thought I saw something there but at the moment it looks like raw talent that needs to be nurtured. Whether Roger remains first choice or not, this young keeper could learn a lot from him (and not how to find touch with a goal kick!)

For now it resolves the problem of no goalkeeper at the club and Brian Murphy becomes the latest player to join Swansea's squad for the battles that the next nine months will bring.
