Nugent's No To Newport

Nugent Rules Out Any Move To Newport

Nugent Rules Out Newport Move

Swans assistant manager Kevin Nugent has ruled out any move to Newport to replace Peter Nicholas declaring that he is happy with his assistant's role at Swansea for now.

Nugent was released by the Swans at the end of last season but was welcomed back into the club by Kenny Jackett who first appointed him onto his coaching staff and then promoted him to assistant manager just before the start of the season.

Since then Nugent has grabbed one goal for the Swans and played an active part recently both from a management and playing perspective.

Nugent was soon linked with the Newport job after the sacking of former Swans assistant manager Peter Nicholas earlier in the week and emerged as someone that the fans would want to see take over as they look to move back up the football pyramid.

But ruling out any possible move, Nugent told the South Wales Argus "I am more then happy to be doing my job here.

"It is nice to be linked with something like this. To be honest, it is a good job.

"Newport have some decent players and are a good club, but I am still learning things now."

He added: "Although I have a nice job as assistant manager I still want to take the slow route through.

"I am working with some great players here. It's a fantastic club and I am learning off a well-respected coach and manager.

"It is a shock that I have been linked with Newport but I am sure they will have some decent candidates for the job.

"But I am enjoying every moment of what I am doing at Swansea at the moment."

Nugent's dismissal of the speculation could leave the way open for another former Swans favourite who returned to his first club after being released from the Vetch at the end of last season. It is understood that Roger Freestone is interested in a step up into management and this unexpected vacancy that has arisen will interest him for that step.
