It looks as though the establishment of the socially-liberal, socialist all-Ireland republic is further away than some imagine. Did the voters think the Irish government is getting too woke?

I an sure killy will tell us the people of Ireland did not know what they were voting for or were misled.

Turn out 44% very low on a par with Senedd elections.

Not at all, its up to the people to decide as per the Good Friday agreement.

Not up to London.
Not up to Dublin.

Thats a good thing and builds on the last 20 years of relative peace.

Michelle O’Neill is building bridges. 🇮🇪☘️

This was a Republic of Ireland referendum nothing to do with NI's Michelle O'Neil.

The people of the ROI rejected the attempts of the Irish PM to make woke ammendments to the Irish constitution.
They are more concerned with the extreme housing shortage in the ROI and high housed prices as well as mass uncontrolled immigration to Ireland as recent riots in Dublin have shown.

I’ve always viewed ROI as backward
It’s something I admit but I’m yet to be convinced it’s otherwise

Simple solution, they’ll keep having referendums until they get the result they want then
Immediately stop having referendums on the subject.

She can build as many bridges as she wants but then people have to want to cross them. On this evidence the people of the ROI have more important things to worry about than Northern Ireland.

In your own words, the people did decide.

The Good Friday Agreement tells you how tbis will be decided.

In February 2024, Michelle O’Neill, the new First Minister of Northern Ireland, said she believes a border poll will be carried out in this decade.

Any growth in the Irish economy is an illusion caused by the global companies diverting all the profits to the Irish tax have paying their capital gains tax then transferring the balance to the USA.

It does lead to any extra jobs in ROI or benefit the Irish people just causes a distortion to the GDP.

Will start to fall when the new EU regulations come onto forced so global companies have to pay corporation tax on the countries the earn their profits.

From the 1st January 2024 these regulations came into force across all EU states.

One imagines that the social welfare dimension is also important to the population, and may not quite line up with the pattern of reporting corporate profits across jurisdictions.

Total Health Expenditure as % GDP (2022 or nearest year)

Germany 12.7%
France 12.1%
Austria 11.4%
UK 11.3%
Spain 10.4%
Romania 6.5%
Ireland 6.1%
Mexico 5.5%

[From OECD 2023 Health at a Glance. Figure 7.1
https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/sites/7a7afb35-en/1/3/7/1/index.html?itemId=/conte

N.B. These are figures for public and private spending combined.

Private domestic health expenditure as % total

Ireland 20.7%
UK 16.29%

[World Bank figures for 2021. https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.XPD.PVTD.CH.ZS?locations=IE-GB]

This is life in the EU after a nasty experience with the Excessive Deficit Procedure. Some of the population are unhappy.

Always easier to be distructive OHL.

But remember its not those who can inflict the most that will prevail, its those who can suffer the most that will prevail.

We will build more bridges.

The GFA gives people choices, it doesn't decide anything, it's a piece of legislation drawn up by some of the very people you wouldn't want making these choices, politicians.

The FM of NI can want what she wants but if the peole of NI voted to reunite with the ROI, it would mean nothing if the people of the ROI rejected them.

The thing about choice is, you can't always predict what people are going to choose and ultimately even if they make the wrong choice, they will choose what they think is best for them at the time.

If the ROI takes back NI it will be a financial burden on them and maybe that will change in time but right now they have a lot tht they seem to think is more important to them.

I agree the Irish people decide - not Westminster..
Cymru needs the same.

The political operators who created the GFA are different class to the modern UK Tory chancers.

Belfast is alteady trading far more with Ireland than pre 2016.
Belfast will super charge tbe future Irish economy.

Ireland had a constitutional claim on the north until the GFA.

Tbe new Ireland will be for everyone.

The people of Wales have decided. 80% want to remain part of a democratic United Kingdom.

They also voted the leave the undemocratic EU.

It is about time you accepted their democratic decisions.

The people of the ROI by a huge majority decided to reject the Irish Government's woke attempt to tinker with the IRISH constitution.

Time you accepted their democratic decisions.

Tony Blair, I would say that he is in exactly the same class as the modern politicians. Look what Blair did.

The new Ireland will be for everyone, yeah, that's eactly what they've been complaining about recently.

On this issue Blair - with others -delvered a generational achievement.

Way above the likes of Johnson, May, Truss, Cameron and little Richard Smith.

On other issues he had seriously poor judgements.

Oh yes, an illegal war, the banrupting of pension funds, the immigration debacle, running up the debt and deficit to then record highs and it has only risen since.

Blairs actions got a lot more people killed than Bojo's.

Killy also forgets that it was John Major and Albert Reynolds that started the peace progress with the 1993 Downing Street declaration . They both signed the declaration that determined the future of NI would be decided by referendums in both the ROI and NI. Five months after this the IRA agreed to a ceasefire and the decommissioning of weapons.

Tony Blair claimed the credit for bring peace to NI but it was was Major and Reynolds that achieved it.

Don't be fooled.

They are light years behind in mentality and their views on criticism is quite child like......criticise outside the Emarald Isles but never in house, it's that mindset that has seen the tag that they are always 10years behind us.
Cover ups and denials are also rife.......aslong as it makes the homeland look good and the UK worse then it's all good to go.

Major and Reynolds started it, Blair did finish it but along the way he gave pardons to sadistic killers and hung our service personnel out to dry.

Its almost like changing nothing would have, you know, changed nothing…..

The leaders of the time had to do what they needed to do to deliver future peace.
Yelling at the moon had failed.

It was far from perfect but it allowed the hard men on both sides to climb down and allowed the more progressive voices at least a chance.

Its almost like you don't understand what was at stake, and what was delivered.
