Introduced in 1889 by German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the world's first state-sponsored social insurance program provided old-age and disability pensions to workers. Designed to curb socialist influence, this system, often called the "Bismarck model," was funded by employer, employee, and state contributions, initially setting the retirement age at 70 before lowering it to 65 in 1916.
According to the podcast I heard this from (Cautionary Tales), at the time, the life expectancy of a German male was 63..! |
