Blues boss Paul Jewell is confident that club owner Marcus Evans will give him the time required to build a successful team at Portman Road. The Town manager says he has developed a good rapport with Evans since his appointment in January.

Jewell said: “I think I’ve maybe got more of a relationship with the owner than perhaps Jim and Roy had. We involve one another when making decisions and I’ve got the confidence that I’ve got a long-term objective here.

“If at the end of the day that doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, but I think the owner sees the plan and the long-term objective exactly the way I see it."

The Blues boss says the pair talk daily: “It’s not as if he’s out every two minutes backing me. Obviously he’s a very private and quiet man, but we speak on the phone regularly, two or three times a day, and I think that’s an important dialogue to have going on.

“I think we’ve got good players, it’s a fantastic football club with great supporters. The only thing that hasn’t been firing on all cylinders is the team, and it’s my job behind the scenes to get it right.

“I’ve been here eight months now and given a fair crack at it, I’m 100% convinced that I’ll get it right.”

Meanwhile, Jewell feels that last week’s Aaron Cresswell compensation tribunal wasn’t the best use of a day, even if the Blues came out of it with what appears to be an excellent deal: “I have to say four hours sat around a table going backwards and forwards was a waste of everybody’s time.

“I think Cressy is going to be a good player for us. Since he’s come here he’s improved an awful lot but he’s still got a long way to go, but we’re pleased with him.

“There have to be more of the likes of Cresswell out there and it’s our aim to get players like that to add to what we’ve got. It’s important to get young players.

“Cressy loves Ipswich, he loves coming here. It’s a big step up for him but he’s taken to it well after a shaky start, and that’s the type of player that we want.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Andy Drury says he feels he wasn’t really given the opportunity to impress prior to making his loan switch to Crawley Town, for whom he scored on his debut on Saturday: “I got the move to Ipswich, and I didn’t play two games in the row there. Even if you are Lionel Messi you are not going to be at your best not playing two games in a row.

“There were a few games [in which] I played well, I didn’t feel I was given a chance but the manager has been good to me to let me go out on loan.

“I will just work as hard as I can here and if it reminds him I am a good player and I go back there and he wants me, then great. If not, I will keep playing football somewhere else.”

Drury’s 93-day loan to the Red Devils includes a clause which could see his move to the League Two club become permanent in January.

The 27-year-old joined Town for £150,000 from Luton in January.
