Morison could go as Leeds need to raise funds
Morison could go as Leeds need to raise funds

It’s becoming increasingly clear that if Brian McDermott is to be able to sign the players he wants, he will have to raise the money himself by selling some of his current squad. One player who could be moving on is Steve Morison, who has attracted attention from his old club Millwall.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that GFH are struggling to locate a pot to piss in and that at the moment they can’t spare any more cash for McDermott to spend in the transfer market. They are still looking for other investors, but to make ends meet they have had to take out a loan from Dubai-based Brendale Holdings, for whom Leeds board member David Haigh serves as a director.

So McDermott has admitted to the Yorkshire Post that he’s going to be forced to start a ‘sell to buy’ policy in order to get the players he wants.  “My targets haven’t changed and I am still talking to the agents and working behind the scenes to do whatever we can try and do. No-one is giving me any impression that they are looking to go anywhere else. But obviously going into July, we want to do these deals and I am still focusing on that.”

Sky Sports are reporting that Millwall have made a bid to bring Steve Morison back to the New Den, although this might just be a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer. Morison scored 40 goals in 95 appearances for the Lions between 2009 and 2011, but due to his fitness problems has endured a frustrating time at Elland Road.

His one decent game in a Leeds shirt was at Palace when he scored two fine goals, but apart from that his only goal for Leeds was at home to Blackpool, when our former donkey Steve Crainey passed the ball straight to him. We could have an excess of forwards next season, as we’ve already signed Matt Smith and Noel Hunt is another probable new player, so it would make sense to save a bit of the wage bill by allowing Morison to return to south London.

Whilst it would be ideal if we could somehow raise enough cash by getting rid of fringe players in areas of the squad where we’ve plenty of options, the reality is that you can only sell a player when another club is a willing buyer. So despite the possibility of a move for Morison, we’ll have to spend the next few weeks wondering if we’re about to lose one or more of our key players.

And the latest news is that Morison actually has gone, on a season-long loan.
