Gomis Can Fulfil French Ambitions

Garry Monk believes that a good season at Swansea could force Bafetimbi Gomis into the French squad for next season's European Championships that take place in his home country.

The Swans could be well represented at next season's finals with Wales also looking strong for qualification and that is on top of the likes of Sigurdsson and Fabianski who could also be making an appearance.

Add to that the likes of Jack Cork and Jonjo Shelvey who will be close to the England squad and you could well have much interest for us to watch as the finals unfold next summer.

Swans boss Garry Monk believes that Bafetimbi Gomis could add his name to the list of those playing though if he continues the form that he showed at the back end of last season and takes it into this coming one.

Gomis had a slow start to life in South Wales where he found himself very much second fiddle to Wilfried Bony for the first half of the season but following his departure to Manchester City then it was Gomis who came to the fore and scored the goals that helped the Swans to their record breaking eighth place.

And despite speculation over the past week over his future, Gomis remains very much part of the Swans plans for the new season as Monk has stated this week.

“I can’t read minds but I see him every day and I think Bafe is looking forward to leading the line in the Premier League rather than playing elsewhere.

“He’s talked about wanting to play for France again and this is the best stage to show what he has — it’s the best league in the world and he has a great chance of doing it.

“I’m sure his focus will be on that and scoring goals and trying to put himself back in the frame for next summer. There’s a few players here for which this could be an important season because of next summer and they’ve got a great chance; it should be their drive.

“Sometimes (interest in a player) can be agent driven and sometimes it’s real. You can only deal with things when they come your way. If we get a serious offer or something serious is put on the table we’ll deal with it then but before that it’s speculation.

“And there’s no problem from my end because every player is focussed and that’s my job to keep it that way no matter what’s happening. What will be will be but Bafe is focussed on doing a good job.

"The same happened in January and he ended finishing the season with us very strongly so I’m not worried about it. We want players ready to push forward and we have that.

“I’m looking forward to working with him this season and having a productive season. We brought Eder in to make sure we had good competition in that position. He finished strong last year and hopefully he can take that on to the new campaign.”
