Is The Capital One Cup A Welcome Distraction?

I have to admit I would find it very hard to diss the Capital One Cup as it is the only major trophy that we have won in our history and I will never forget just how proud I was at Wembley back in 2013 when Ashley Williams and Garry Monk lifted the trophy.

But for many the Capital One Cup at this stage of the season is a distraction that many could do without. You will only have to look at the 24 fixtures that are being played this week and compare the team sheets of the 48 teams competing to the team sheets that they presented today and you will realise just how little they seem to care at this stage of the season.

But this trophy represents a great chance of success for every team in the Premier League and I really hope we do enough at every stage to ensure our progression which I think is the key.

There is little doubt in my mind that on Tuesday night we will see the likes of Nordfeldt, Tabanou and Eder making their first starts for the Swans whilst I suspect the likes of Dyer, Routledge, Grimes and Britton will also be playing which should ensure that the Swans have more than enough to get past York.

And that is another reason for me why I would never diss the Capital One Cup as it now means we can get match practice in for players who have not yet had a real chance in the Premier League this season.

As it stands we have had an excellent start to the season and long may that continue but good form means unchanged teams on a frequent basis and that is why we need to get these players some game time so they are sharper when their chance comes around in the league which of course it will do.

And for York this is a decent payday for them with a crowd maybe of 8000-10000 expected for the game which can give them such much needed income as we know all too well is vital at League Two level.

So as much as there will be many managers who secretly hope that their team gets knocked out this week I do not believe that Garry Monk will be one of them and I fully expect us to be in the draw for the third round and one game nearer repeating that success we had in 2013
