McDermott signs for Swindon

It's been confirmed that Donal McDermott has signed for Swindon Town on a free transfer.

Pictures of McDermott training with the Robins emerged last week, confirming that the out of contract winger hadn't travelled to Tenerife with the rest of the Dale squad. But it's gone one step further today with news that McDermott had signed a one year deal with the Wiltshire club.

Speculation had already been mounting that McDermott might be leaving the club. Most supporters felt that he'd been fortunate to receive the offer of a new contract after an indifferent season in which he made just a handful of appearances for the club, and he came very close to signing for Chesterfield before having his contract offer withdrawn.

In signing for Swindon, he will join up with former Dale assistant manager David Flitcroft and former Dale captain Ollie Lancashire. He told the STFC official website “From the minute the gaffer phoned me it was all about getting promoted and the fact Swindon is in this league makes it obvious that we are going to be doing everything to get promoted and get back to where we need to be."
