Refwatch: Dale v Doncaster
Monday, 27th Nov 2017 21:42 by TVOS

Darren Handley is the referee for Dale’s Checkatrade Trophy tie at home to Doncaster on Tuesday.

The Bolton official is in his fourth season on the referees’ list and this is his fifth match at the Crown Oil Arena as the man in the middle, all of which have come in the 21 months.

The first of those four games was in February 2016 when Darren took charge of the 1-0 midweek win over Fleetwood, while in the following summer he refereed Dale’s 1-1 friendly draw with Blackburn.

Just over a year ago he was in the middle when Dale put on a fine performance to thrash Swindon 4-0 and in the summer just gone, he was back for another friendly which ended in a 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough.

Darren was also due to referee Dale’s midweek home match versus Port Vale in April, only for there to be a late change 24 hours before the game.

Mr Handley appeared at the Crown Oil Arena in his days as a linesman, most notably in August 2007 for the Carling Cup tie against Stoke.

The game ended 2-2 after 120 minutes, before Dale won on penalties against a City side destined to reach the Premier League nine months later.

Darren, a PE teacher, was promoted from the Conference list at the end of the 2013/14 season and refereed Oxford v Burton as his first league appointment.

He has officiated mainly in the bottom two divisions since then, as well as a handful of Championship fixtures in 2015/16.

Before the weekend, when he was in the middle at Carlisle v Morecambe, Mr Handley had taken charge of 18 games this season, showing 52 yellow cards and three red.

Two of those games involved Doncaster — their 1-0 loss at Northampton in September and their 4-1 home win over Southend a month later.
