Former keeper an international?
Former keeper an international?

After Frankie Fielding's call up for England, is there another former Rochdale keeper set for international recognition?

Matt Gilks, who has established himself as the number one choice at Premiership side Blackpool, could well be on the verge on an international call up for Scotland.

The Rochdale born keeper qualifies for Scotland via a grandparent, and has come under the watchful eye of Scotland manager Craig Levein after playing a pivotal role in Blackpool's promotion to the top flight last season.

Levein has been quoted as saying: "Gilks is one we became aware of a while ago and we have kept track of his progress.  Obviously he was a key figure in Blackpool's promotion to the Barclays Premier League, and he is one I think we need to take a closer look at. He comes highly recommended, is playing regularly for his club and the next logical step is for our goalkeeping coach to work closely with him."

With Scotland's first choice keeper Craig Gordon ruled out through injury, and Scotland having to rely on a reserve from Rangers, signs are looking promising for the keeper who played close to two hundred appearances for Dale.

The next Scotland squad will be announced on Friday 3rd September for their trip to Lithuania.
