A late change of referee sees Grant Hegley replace Phil Gibbs as the man in the middle at Spotland on Tuesday night.

Now in his tenth season on the Football League list, Mr Hegley has refereed five previous Dale games, of which we have won just one.

That came the last time we saw him in November 2008 when first half goals from Rory McArdle and Will Buckley helped Dale to a 2-1 victory at Brentford.

In April 2002 we saw Mr Hegley for the 1-1 draw at Lincoln that virtually condemned Dale to the play-offs rather than automatic promotion.

Eight months later he refereed a 2-0 defeat at Oxford, while in March 2005 he was the man in the middle for a Good Friday 3-0 loss at Southend.

Grant’s other Dale game saw him make his only previous visit to Spotland when Dale drew 0-0 with Darlington in March 2007.

This season Grant has refereed seven games, showing 14 yellow cards and two red.

His most recent match was on Saturday when he took charge of Wycombe’s 2-2 home draw with Shrewsbury.
