Life changing moments
at 00:05 1 Jun 2024

Certainly can't compete with some of the examples here, but the decision to go backpacking in the mid 90s which was partly triggered by a long term relationship ending would be it for me. Its the reason I am now permanently in Australia having met my wife here.

And obviously when my two kids were born.

Also was very close to being hit by speeding cars on two occasions. One when a kid and another when about 19 and the driver decided to fly through a red light as I was crossing.

Oh and when I was born I had to be delivered with forceps because I was smothering. My mum said I came out blue, so I guess that was a pretty life changing moment even if I knew nothing about it.

I went to Barca v Sampdoria in the early 90s. Great atmosphere produced by the fans but god the game was boring. It was like that piss take of football The Simpsons did for the most part.

A cracking Koeman free kick won it for Barca in extra time. We were dreading penalties because we wanted to get to the pub!

I was there in the Boro end. Fantastic to be there to see them relegated live.

They didn't like it at all and were very angry indeed afterwards.

As a Celtic man that's actually pretty good from a section of society not known for their sense of humour.

100%. This is becoming really dangerous. It was rampant a few years ago and with some big elections this year I'd expect it to increase again. The amount of twitter accounts for example that suddenly appeared (supporting both sides) during the last US election and then vanished once it was over was incredible. There have been token efforts to control it but its very much still there.

Facebook started out as just re-connecting with people, sharing holiday photos etc but got super political around the time of the brexit referendum and Trump becoming president. I've seen people on there that were fairly mellow turn into raging fanatics and it has to be down to being on too many pages that are echo chambers. Some seem to spend their lives raging about things online, a pretty miserable existence.

Even local groups usually used for things like recommending trades people and mundane stuff are targeted, sometimes obviously but also in very subtle ways.

There's a place for all political arguments if they are based on reason, a genuine belief and conviction about bettering society. But too much these days is blatant dishonesty allowed a free pass by an increasingly compliant media that will publish anything that gets clicks and therefore makes them money. Politicians have picked that up and run with it and the waters are murkier than ever.

Getting your views from Spitting Image is probably no worse than getting them from the Sun, Mirror, Express, Mail, Sky News, GB News etc as so many do.

There's a reason why so many of these outlets put deliberately misleading headlines on stories than often when you read them bear little resemblance to the title, its because so many don't bother to read beyond it.

At least Spitting Image lampooned all sides. Too many media outlets are essentially just ongoing campaigns for political parties, mainly the tories.

In the Royal Oak in Harrow back in the day there was a tit for tat Rangers v Celtic graffiti thing going on in the toilets. Started off with "Glasgow Rangers, the team" to which someone added "of c**ts" and on it went from there. Was quite amusing.

Also seen in a pub, "if you can p1ss this high you should be in the fire brigade".

And to top it all off they almost ruined the trophy lift by playing that dreadful Pharrell Williams "Happy" crap.

The M Khan one was featured on The Mary Whitehouse Experience several times, including in those stupid professor name calling sketches "see that M Khan, that's you that is".

The crossbar one did bring back unpleasant memories of John Gregory in the 82 replay.

Due to the time zone here I didn't stay up to watch it. I did however notice in the BBC updates before going to bed the absolute gushing about how brilliantly Leeds had started the game and how Southampton were struggling to get out of their own end.

How very dare Southampton then go and win the game.

They wouldn't get a large majority if the current government wasn't such an utter embarrassment. They themselves had a big majority and have pissed it up the wall with unbelievable incompetence and dishonesty.

They could have buried Labour and instead have buried themselves.

Live seemed to be played everywhere when I first came to Australia in the mid 90s. A friend lent me the album and I tried to like them as much as everyone else seemed to but it was never going to happen.

The Final: Attack on Wembley - Netflix
at 03:47 25 May 2024

It comes down to audience interest and how much the makers and Netflix can profit by producing it.

Quite simply, a story about crowd issues at a big international football final involving England is going to attract more viewers and interest than trouble at a Brixton Academy event most people would never have heard of.

Its about simple old supply and demand, nothing else.
