If we sell Archer for 10mill having bought him for £15mill, was he a success as well?

Southampton Put In Bid For Defender But Is He What They Need
at 17:01 30 Jan 2026

Im genuinely not sure if you are on a wind up. I wasnt saying that they were all bought for the first team. They were all young punts that SR clearly thought they would make money on. Im arguing that SR are now purely a player trading company and the football is a secondary thought.

So why do you think SR bought a 19year old goalkeeper when we were in the premiership? They could of had Sam jJnstone on a free that summer. Frankly if he has been such a success why has he been loaned to Stoke?

We lost money on Sulemana, he was our record signing at 22mill and reportedly left for £16mill. Suggesting he was a success is laughable when you spent 3 years running him down. Why would we be quids in if he moves to Roma?

How has Armstong more than paid for himself. He was bought to score goals in the premiership and failed miserably twice. Dont forget you said he would easily replace Brojas poor return of 6 goals in a season. Hes been a poor signing

You would sign a Kieffer Moore as he would give you a presence up front and get you promoted. Instead we bought Downes who has gone out on loan as he was so bad.

The point is we have easily wasted 20mill on punts that got no where near the first team. Just for once it would be great to see the club get that expiernced defender the team needs, rather than another teenager for a few mill that will disappear in 12 months time never to be seen again.

Im not going through every payer... but i need to pick you up on the following players.

Also your definition of success is different to mine. I would suggest yours is largely in line with a trading club that just buys players to make a profit and not to build a team towards success.

Baz was signed for the Premiership not the championship. He was bought for 12 mill, and will no doubt leave on a free in 18months time. He will have cost millions in wages, bonus and tax that will not be recouped in a transfer to a bigger club.

Sulemana we signed for 22mill and sold for a reported 15mill. he wasnt a success on a player level or a transfer profit.

You mention Armstrong - hes been a success. He was bought to score goals and keep us in the premiership. It was step to far for him and will be sold at a loss.

Charles i wouldnt consider a success. Hes in his 3rd season and now up to speed with the championship.

Lavia from a playing perspective wasnt really a success. First half of the season he was good then disappeared in the 2nd half of the season. The team would have been stronger if we had kept Romeu.

Interesting you pick Zach Awe - he was signed to challenge for a first team place and supposedly he was a real coup. Where is he now :-)

Edit Daimon Downs is a classic example of the fact the club is hear just to make money on player trading. If you wanted to go up surely you go and get Kieffer Moore at a fraction of the cost.

5 things about watching it on my couch :-)

1) no early queuing to get into my lounge, beer and snacks allowed but don’t spill it on the bloody carpet.

2) Sky decided to hide the game behind the red button and show a woman’s game watched by 2 birds and their dog.

3) half time slash in toilets that were not trashed.

4) 2 kids tried to invade the lounge in the 2nd half and were swiftly dealt with.

5) mid afternoon nap when it was all over.

Well done to all those that went and put on some decent support

I thought Azaz was good yesterday. A lot of chasing and closing down and worked hard. Created two good chances. Him and Leo coming cost us any threat up front.

Armstrong needs to be burying those chances

I’m not sure how you can compare the two? Different positions.

Armstrong has also missed a lot of penalties.

We were an established premiership club at the time, so could have hoped for a bit better. The moment SR came in Ralph was a dead man. All Ralph wanted was a decent forward and he got given Mara ffs. SR are completely to blame for spending loads on utter crap youngsters that were never good enough for the prem. In fact most were not good enough for the championship.

I’m actually happy Stephens is playing. I’m not unhappy Bree is starting , he is solid at this level. It’s just the randomness of picking players. How can you not start fellows ?
